Chapter Four.

Immortal.

Part One: LANCE AND HIS SECRET WEAPON.

Karmen slowly, and unsteadily, got to her feet. Her head was spinning, and her legs were like jelly. Wherever Lance had wanted them to go, they were there. She looked around but did not recognize her surroundings. "Lance?" She called but she got no reply.

She took a couple of shaky steps, until a bright light appeared before her, and a sharp cold wind thrust her backward. A portal. Lance emerged unshaken. "Where are we?" Karmen asked.

"I can't tell you."

"Who are we here to see?"

"I can't tell you that either, not yet." Lance put away his wand and started to walk by Karmen, almost as though she wasn't there.

"Why not?"

"Well, when we get there you'll either do one of two things: Run away like a scared little girl back to Ayda to get the others, or, you will accompany us to where he thinks we need to be." Said Lance, being as vague as possible.

"Basically this is a test of my trust?"

Lance stopped dead but did not turn to look at her. "Hmm. You are a clever lady." Then he carried on walking.

It looked like they were in a forest; tall trees surrounded them, logs lying on the ground, twigs snapping under their feet and a small river passing by, with rocks jutting out at all angles. The river had a rickety wooden bridge, which Lance soon made clear they would have to cross, one at a time. It was very old and very unstable; it probably wouldn't hold the both of them at the same time. It would surely break under their weight.

The running river had a calming effect of Karmen's mind, which was trying to work at a hundred miles per hour, at this moment. Trying to figure out who Lance could be taking her to. Where were they? Is this all a trap? Will he leave me in this strange place so he can run off with the shield? Those were all the questions running through her head.

Would it be Limus? Will he be waiting for them? As she cautiously stepped over the bridge, she allowed her mind to concentrate on her footing, so as not to fall. There were planks of wood missing from the bridge. It definitely needed rebuilding. "Someone should really fix this." Karmen muttered.

"Someone might, if anyone even lived here."

"So why are we here then?" Karmen had decided she had finally had enough of Lance's secrecy. "What's going on?"

"Nothing for you to worry about, my love. Nothing at all." Lance sighed as he waited for her to descend the steps leading from the heart stopping bridge, to the solid ground.

"If no one lives here, who could we possibly be here to see? A tree? That's all there is around here!"

"Will you calm down! No one other than the person we are here to see. And I wouldn't say they live here exactly, just hiding out until we have a plan, because right now all we're doing is using portals to go from place to place so we're harder to find."

"We don't even know they're looking for us..."

"Oh they will be, soon enough. Now come on, stop your whining and follow me." Lance whirled around and walked off ahead, leaving Karmen rushing to catch up.

"How long have we been walking for?" Karmen asked.

"Only an hour. Relax we're almost there."
