Chapter Two

Further Away.

Part One: KARMEN

He was glad that she had finally come to her senses. He was also glad that she had not stabbed him in the back and told his wife about their affair. When he had heard that Karmen was running for the position of Leader, he had begun to worry. His wife, Meryl, had been completely in the dark.

Now Karmen was here with them, and the shield. They knew they would be being hunted down soon. It had been a year, they demon hunters had been trained every day, allies been brought in, warlocks trying to track the shield. As far as they knew, they had failed. "It will only be a matter of time, Lance." Karmen said. "They will find us."

"That's why we have to keep moving." Lance said as he stood from the small stone wall he had been sat on. The book containing the shield was always tucked into the pocket of his long cloak. "Staying in Helroute for much longer would be dangerous. This is the first place they'll look. After all, they do call this the Demon City."

"So where do we go?"

"I know someone who can help us." Lance said.

"Who?"

"You'll see." Lance picked up a bag and thrust it at Karmen. "Hand me your wand." With a flash and a low rumble, a portal opened, and Lance dragged Karmen through.

Karmen couldn't believe she had been such a pushover at the Hall. How could I let a bunch of teenagers push me away? He had ordered her to stay, to find out their plans, to lead them to him so he could kill them all, along with the army he could create once he had all the Relics. Only two Relics away from creating an army of dangerous, blood-thirsty demons.

She hadn't stayed though. She knew they were beginning to look into her. And they aren't stupid, they would have figured it out eventually. They would find out that Lance had rigged the election, made her the Leader for a sinister reason. Then she would have been killed. They were merciless like that in those situations. She was thankful to still have her life.

Part Two: WHAT IF?

Kaine stood with his feet firmly glued to the ground, staring down at the stone standing out from the grass. Tria's headstone. He had cleaned it every day. It probably wouldn't have needed doing every day, but it gave him something to do. Kept him sane, in a way. He heard footsteps coming up behind him, crunching on the dry summer grass. He turned just his head to see who was approaching. "Cody." He said. "What's the matter with you?"

"Who said anything was the matter?"

"Madame Greta. That woman knows her stuff, you know?" Kaine brushed off the last leaf from his sister's grave.

"So I've heard." Cody glanced down at the grave, then up at Kaine's disconsolate face. "And the matter with me is probably the same as what the matter with you is."

"Walk with me, Cody. Let's talk."

Cody gathered up the cloth that Kaine was cleaning the headstone with and stuffed it into his pocket. They had only got a few steps away when Kaine reeled around and said, "Imagine, Cody... Imagine if we weren't who we were, imagine we were normal... Tria would still be alive. As would Katia. And young Lorelei and her aunt." He didn't stop walking, though, so now he was cautiously stepping backwards, dodging the exotic flowers and small statues around the gardens.

"I've been thinking the same thing. I look at Skarlet and Jayden and wonder what will become of them. What will happen in the next battle? Will they survive? Will only one? Where will that leave the other one? See... We lost Damon, and you lost your sister. We know how they will feel, but they don't seem to share the same fear. Either they don't really care, or they think they're invincible." Cody spoke, looking down at the browning grass.
