Masons POV:

After that heated conversation with my mother, I went over to crash a party hosted by some guy in school. That was my opportunity to say farewell to my friends because of the new arrangement. I did some crazy shit, got wasted for probably the last time and got home real late.

I woke up with a killer hangover and dragged myself to the bathroom to take a shower. I took some painkillers and headed downstairs and was met with the inviting smell of pancakes.

I watched my mother as she moved swiftly round the kitchen, setting two plates of pancakes on the counter, pour syrup on them and topped them with a single cherry each.
“That smells great momma” I said, leaning on the door of the kitchen. Her eyes met mine and she beckoned me to come over to the counter.

“I’m really sorry about the way I acted yesterday. I want you to know that I was only looking out for you. But just know that my decision remains. There’s no way you’re changing my mind now”, she said taking a seat beside me on the counter.

I kissed her cheek and took a plate for myself, “Good Morning to you too mom”.

She rolled her eyes and stayed silent. We sat there eating for a while till she cleared her throat and spoke up. “So your flight has been fixed for 7pm today. I hope you don’t mind spending the day with me”.

I narrowed my eyes at her, feigning hurt, “Are you trying to get rid of me that soon?”.

She gave me a small smile, “Of course not. But since a new school year starts on Monday, I decided to work with the time frame there”.

I heaved a sigh, “Alright, since my date has already been sealed, there’s no harm in spending the day with you since it’s the last I’m going to spend with you for a long time”.

She grinned at me, “Splendid then, I’m going to go get ready for our day of fun”.

As I watched her walk up the stairs, my mind wandered to what Gerald, my supposed father, was up to. Probably having fun with another woman instead of having fun with family.
That bastard had better not break my mother while I’m gone.

At the moment I was listening to my mom go on and on about ‘Tips on surviving in Naija’ as we drove to the Airport. I tried hard to not tune her out because I was exhausted as hell after the long day we had.

We had shopping, got facials at the spa (I had to!!!), saw a movie, and a ton of other things.

When we got to the airport checkpoint where she would leave me, it dawned on me as a tear escaped my eye that this was the last time I’d see her for a long while.

She wiped the tear from my eye, “Don’t cry baby, you’ll make me cry”.

I hugged her close, “I’m not a baby anymore mom, but I can’t help but feel sad because I won’t see you for a long time”.

She replied, “I know baby, but there are certain sacrifices people have to make to become better versions of themselves”.

I chose not to reply her as I took hold of my suitcase and hugged her one more time before walking off.

As I walked she yelled to me, “Make Momma Proud Boy”.
‘Oh most definitely’ I said silently.

The flight to my mother’s hometown was completely depressing all thanks to some Nigerian girl who sat next to me flirting most of the time. I mean I know I have the looks and all, but she was way too slutty and went way too far.

The only reason I didn’t respond to her was because of the promise I made to my mom, else lord knows what would have happened on that plane.

At one O’clock Nigerian time, I disembarked the plane after an uncomfortable fourteen plus hours.

As I left the airport, I spotted my cousin Joshua waving at me to get my attention.
Thanks to him, my stay here became less unbearable because I had grown fond of him all the times he had come over for holidays.

Let me be honest, I’m not sure who’s worse off between him and I. Even as the child of a pastor, he did a shitload of crazy things that they never found out about, which made us partners in crime whenever we were together.

The annoying Nigerian girl passed by me and winked as he jogged up to meet me halfway and started pestering me with questions.
“Yo bro, been a while. When mumsy told me you were coming, I was so excited and I volunteered almost immediately to pick you up after service. The tag team is back, Mason and Joshua, breaking hearts everywhere. I see you already got a headstart. So who’s she? She fine? Did you get her number? Anything happen on that plane?”.

I laughed as I handed my suitcase to the driver, “Calm your tits boy, I can’t answer that many questions at a time, take a chill pill”.

We got into the car and the driver loaded my bags into the trunk and got into the car and drove off.

Tomorrow is the beginning of another chapter in my life, a chapter where I turn over a new leaf for my mom’s sake. Here’s to hoping everything turns out well.
