2. Centipede

"Which one of you was gonna tell me that Grant Ward was on this team?"

"Not me." Veronica and Maggie said at the same time, shooting each other a knowing glance.

"You two know how I feel about being kept in the dark." Emilee glared.

"We knew that if we told you, you would do something you definitely shouldn't." Maggie pointed out.

"I don't get your deal with this guy." Veronica spoke up. "I mean, you know I have you back no matter what, but shouldn't we at least try to be civil? We're going to be stuck on a plane with him for god only knows how long."

"Just wait. You'll see exactly what I'm talking about. Grant Ward is a self righteous prick, and a-"

"Agent Hughes." A deep, annoyed voice said from behind the trio.

"Grant Ward." Emilee rolled her eyes. "Wish the rising tide had taken you out when they had the chance."

"Emilee." Veronica cut her friend off. "Seriously?"

"Why don't we just make our way over there?" Maggie said awkwardly, not giving Emilee the chance to object. She just latched on to her arm and yanked her in the opposite direction.

"Sorry about her." Veronica shook her head in disbelief. "I'm Veronica Stark." She extended her hand out to shake his.

"I know who you are." He replied coolly, not bothering to shake her hand.

"Okay then." She crossed her arms over her chest. "Is this gonna be a problem, you and Emilee?"

"No. But I have a problem with anyone who takes jobs away from people who actually earn them."

"I don't know what you're implying, but I didn't take anything from anyone. I trained and I graduated from the operations academy just like everybody else. Top of my class."

"Please." Ward scoffed. "You got this job for one reason. You're Stark's kid."

"If that's what you need to believe, then go ahead. It's not my job to prove to anyone else that I belong here."

"Told you so." Emilee smirked as Veronica took a seat on the couch next to her friends.

"What are you talking about?"

"What did he say?" Emilee asked. "I know it was something to piss you off."

"He basically said I was daddy's little rich girl. That I didn't earn my spot on this team." Veronica shrugged it off.

"He said what?" Maggie demanded.

"I'll kill him." Emilee chimed in.

"It's not that big of a deal. I know how hard I worked to get here. I don't need anyone else's validation to be able to do my job."

"Good to hear it." The girls looked up, startled. Coulson stood before them, a small smile on his face.

"Hey, Coulson." Veronica got up to hug him him. "It's good to see you."

"It's killing you, isn't it?" He sighed.

"What?"

"Not being able to tell them I'm alive."

Veronica nodded. "Yeah, I've been feeling pretty guilty about it. But don't worry, I won't slip up."
