"Nozaki-kun!
The familiar cry of his name made him turn around, and lowered his gaze to meet Sakura's, who had just run up from behind.
"Are we working on your manga at your house again today?" she asked, her purple eyes searching his face.
"Of course. It isn't finished yet, so I will need your help on it," he replied.
She beamed, and she clasped her hands behind her back. "Okay! I'll see you later then, Nozaki-kun!" With that, she spun around and skipped away, her cheeks reddening as she turned her face away from her crush.
-You seemed a little too eager there, Chiyo!- she thought to herself as she slowed her skipping to a walk. -Calm down so he doesn't think you're overexcited for a simple visit to his house! It's what you always do!-
Once school had ended, Sakura hurried out of her class to find Nozaki, but as soon as she left her class, she ran straight into Wakamatsu.
"Wakamatsu! Have you seen Nozaki-kun?" she asked, trying to keep the urgency out of her voice.
Wakamatsu tilted his head and furrowed his brow. "Ehhh... I haven't seen him since lunch. I wouldn't know where he is now. Doesn't he go straight home after school, though?"
"You're right! I'll just go to the front of the school. Thank you, Wakamatsu!" She gave him an appreciative smile and sped off, leaving the underclassman wondering what all her hurry was about.
Sakura reached the glass doors that led to the outside, and pushed through them to wait at the top of the steps. She clutched her bag and scanned her surroundings, but she couldn't spot the familiar tall black-haired man anywhere.
"Sakura?" Her polka dot bows flopped as she whipped her head around to find Nozaki standing behind her, looking a bit confused.
"Nozaki-kun! There you are! I'm ready to go work on your manga!" she said. A smile broke out on her face, and that made Nozaki give her a little half smile.
"Great. Let's go," he said, and began to walk down the steps. Sakura followed him quickly. As they walked down the familiar road to Nozaki's house, Sakura couldn't help but feel that somehow, this stroll of theirs seemed different today. She discreetly slid her eyes to her left, where he was calmly walking beside her.
Beside her. There it was.
Ever since she has started to help him work on his manga after school, if they had walked together to his house, he would always be a few steps ahead with Sakura following him like a little lamb. But this time, he had been considerate enough to slow down to stay beside her, and she didn't know what to think about that.
-Is it because he feels differently about me than I thought he did?- Sakura shook her head. -Of course not! Everything's just a manga reference to him...-
They arrived at Nozaki's house, and the two set to work at their usual spots in his room. As Sakura shaded one page of a completed manga sheet, she raised her eyes from her work to gaze at Nozaki. He was focused on darkening the lines of a page of his manga, and was oblivious to the world around him.
-He's so handsome when he's focused on his work like that...- She let out a tiny sigh, her line of sight running from his tousled black hair to his sharp nose to his long fingers grasping a pencil, making short, quick strokes as he darkened the lines of his characters and their dialogue.
She was so carried away in admiring Nozaki that she nearly had a heart attack when she heard him say, "Sakura? Are you done with that page?"
Sakura jerked her eyes up to meet his his, and found that he was already looking at her, which meant that he must have seen her staring at him, which meant - "I-I'm sorry, Nozaki-kun! I really didn't mean t-to stare at you like that... I'm going to go to the bathroom right now!" She hastily got to her feet and rushed out of his room and skidded into the bathroom, slamming the door shut. She rested her back against the door, slowly sliding down until she was sitting on the cold tile.
-Why do I drag myself into these situations?- She slapped a hand against her forehead. -Why can't you keep calm around him?- Sakura sighed and pulled her knees up to her chest.
-Okay, go back out there. You can do it. It was one small mistake, just get back to working on the manga.- She nodded to herself and stood up, opening the door and walking back to the room.
"Sorry about all that, Nozaki-kun. I just had to - oh no -!" When Sakura entered the room, she had tripped over a tanuki that was lying carelessly in the doorway. She braced herself for the impact of the floor, but she never felt it. Instead, she felt a strong, firm build beneath her as she fell into Nozaki's arms to the floor.
There was complete silence for a few moments, and then Sakura realized the reality of what she had just done.
"Oh my goodness I'm so sorry Nozaki-kun I honestly don't know how this happened please let me get up off of you I'm so sor-" She set off on a stream of apologies, but before she could remove herself from Nozaki's arms - which, she had to admit, felt very warm and comfortable - she was silenced by what could only be a kiss from Nozaki.
Sakura's eyes widened as he pressed his lips to hers, and her hands, resting against his chest, slowly curled around the folds of his shirt as she kissed back. Nozaki's and her lips fit perfectly together, and his were ever so soft. Nozaki's arms enveloped her, and she was pressed into a hug as they parted.
"N-Nozaki-kun...?" Sakura still clutched at his shirt with one hand as she gazed into his eyes. He adjusted himself into a sitting position, with her lower body in between in his legs, and her left arm was on one side of him. It was a very intimate pose, and Sakura could feel it intensely.
"I did see you staring at me as I worked," he murmured. "When you went to the bathroom, I thought that the only way to make you feel better after your embarrassment was this."
"You didn't have to do that, I mean, we're just friends, after all." Even as she said it, she knew that this very situation was something reminiscent of lovers, not friends.
Nozaki frowned, and Sakura inhaled sharply. "You didn't like what I did? Then I apologize, Sak-"
"No, that's not what I meant!" she interrupted. She broke their gaze and cast hers downwards, where her hand was fiddling with his shirt. "I mean that-that what you did was something you'd do if you..." Her next words were inaudible to him, and he tilted his head slightly.
"If I what, Sakura?" She shot her eyes up to meet his and just as quickly put them down, her face growing hot.
"If you - if you had feelings for me," she whispered.
Nozaki pressed her closer to him, and Sakura stiffened. "But you see, Sakura, that's exactly why," he spoke into her ear. He was so close that his lips brushed it, and she shivered at his touch.
"Th-then I have something to say, Nozaki-kun!" She lifted her eyes and met his dark ones. "I have feelings for you, too!"
He smiled a little smile. Sakura's heart skipped a beat, and, as if Nozaki could hear it, he sped it up even more by planting another kiss on her lips. This one was a bit more heated than the last, as Nozaki lowered his hands down her back, making her shudder, and she caressed his hair, reveling in its softness.
They broke apart, and Sakura lay her head against his chest. Nozaki pulled his legs up to fully envelop her in a hug.
"I love you, Nozaki-kun," she murmured.
He gave her a kiss on top of her head. "I love you as well, dear Sakura."
