The door slammed shut with a resounding thud as Sakura Chiyo shivered in the cold winter wind. She loosened her red scarf a bit so it didn't chafe her neck, and she rubbed her hands together to generate warmth.
It was Christmas Eve, and Sakura couldn't believe she was spending it with none other than the secret love of her life, Umetaro Nozaki.
He had unexpectedly called her up the day before, and Sakura had nearly dropped her phone in excitement when he told her his plans for the next night.
"You want me to come over and spend Christmas Eve with you?" she had asked incredulously, rolling over to lay on her side on her bed. She faced the wall and drummed her fingers against it.
"Yes," he replied, and a huge grin broke out on Sakura's face as he continued. "I feel it would be a great chance to get some work done and relax as well."
"Oh." -Working on the manga on Christmas Eve?- Sakura brought the tip of her thumb to her mouth and bit at it. -As long as I'm with Nozaki-kun, it'll be fine!- "I'd love to go! Thank you for inviting me, Nozaki-kun!"
Now that she was here, she realized the tall young man was nowhere to be seen. She clasped her hands together and looked around at the house that she had come to know so well in the past few months. She peeked around the corner of the hallway to see if he might appear, but to no avail.
Suddenly a worrying thought popped into her head, and Sakura snapped her head up to look above her. -Is there mistletoe anywhere in this house?- She placed her hands in her cheeks, feeling them grow hot. -What if we're caught under mistletoe together...!-
"Hello, Sakura. I'm glad you came." At the sound of Nozaki's voice, Sakura turned her head and immediately brightened up at the sight of her crush. "Hi, Nozaki-kun!"
He smiled, a rarity for the usually stone-faced man. Sakura felt as if her insides were melting. He looked absolutely adorable when he smiled.
"I've prepared a dinner for us. Come on to the kitchen and we can eat," he said, and set off to where the table was already set up with many bowls and plates filled with delicious-looking food.
"Uwaaa!" Sakura folded her legs underneath her as she sat down and took in the sight of the wonderfully prepared food. "This looks amazing!"
"I'm glad you think so," Nozaki responded as he too sat down across from Sakura and began to choose his plate.
The two ate in silence for a few moments, Sakura savoring the taste of Nozaki's cooking. -I'd love to wake up to this every day...- she daydreamed.
Before Nozaki dug in, however, he pulled out his camera and proceeded to snap a picture of his food, for a manga reference as always. Looking down at the picture, a second smile appeared on his face in a matter of minutes. It wasn't a picture of his food, but of Sakura.
Sakura, who had been subtly gazing at Nozaki in the meantime, noticed the change in expression, and subsequently asked, "Did your picture turn out well, Nozaki-kun? Can I see it?"
"Oh, um..." Amazingly, Nozaki became a little red, and Sakura tilted her head.
"I-It came out blurry."
"Oh, I see." She searched his face for a few more seconds before she returned to her food. -Did it really come out blurry? I've never seen him blush like that...-
After the two had finished, Nozaki excused himself to go retrieve something from his room, and he told to her to sit and wait on the couch. Before long, he returned with a small red box in his hand which was topped with a green bow. He rounded the couch corner and sat down beside her, and Sakura exhaled sharply through her nose.
-He's so close to me... What do I do?- She gulped as Nozaki said, "I got this for you, Sakura. I hope you like it." He placed the present in her lap and kept his eyes on her.
Sakura realized that he must be waiting for her to open it, and mouthed an "Oh!" before slowly tearing away the wrapper. Inside was a black velvet box, and Sakura was blushing furiously as she opened it. It was a stunning pretty silver necklace with a red bow charm, polka dotted white just like hers.
For a moment, she couldn't even speak; she was so overcome with joy. "Th-thank you, Nozaki-kun!" Unsure of what to do next, she removed her scarf and gently picked up the necklace. Before she could put it on, Nozaki interrupted. "Do you need help with that?"
Sakura opened her mouth, then closed it and nodded, not trusting herself to speak in case she squeaked out a response. He took the necklace from her hands, and she turned so her back faced him. He reached around to her front and clasped the necklace, and lay the cool chain on her skin.
"It's beautiful, Nozaki-kun," she said when she had turned back to face him. Her purple eyes widened suddenly, and her hand flew to her mouth. "I didn't get anything for you, Nozaki-kun! Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry-!" She buried her face in her hands. -Why didn't I think of that? It's Christmas Eve! You exchange presents on Christmas Eve!-
A slight touch on her arm made her raise her head, and she gasped as she saw Nozaki tying her scarf around her arm into a bow.
"Eh, Nozaki-kun... What are you doing?" She lifted her eyes to meet his as he looked down at her, a strange glint in his eyes.
"Oh, Sakura..." He bent down, slid his arms under her and proceeded to lift her from the couch into a bridal-style carry, and traipsed out of the living room and down the hallway. Sakura clung to his neck for dear life, but at the same time her heart was pounding rapidly. -He's carrying me! We're so close together, I think I might die...-
He entered his room and lay her gently on his bed, placing his arms on either side of her and lowering his face so that he was nose to nose with her.
"You didn't have to get me a present, Sakura. All I want for Christmas is you." Before she knew it, he had pressed his lips to hers in a long kiss that made her heart speed up until she thought it would burst out of her chest.
She ached for them to stay like that for a little longer, but he pulled away before she felt she was finished. "I still d-don't understand why you're doing this, Nozaki-kun..." Sakura felt she was close to tears, but she cleared her throat. "Is this just a manga reference?"
"Of course not," Nozaki replied, his eyes locked with hers. "I did see something similar to this in a manga, but I thought you would love it if I did this to you." He touched her face and looked at her with warmth in his eyes. "All I need for Christmas is you."
He kissed her again, but had to pull back because Sakura was laughing. "You're so kind, Nozaki-kun." She yanked his tie so he stooped down and their lips met again.
After they had gotten their fill of each other's presence, Sakura snuggled up to Nozaki and rested her head on his chest. Nozaki placed his arms around her, and the two fell asleep as the first snow began to fall outside.
