after having a conversation with jaemin, donghyuck blinked to mark's place. he was outside his door and was anxiously overthinking everything. what if jaemin misinterpreted the signs? what if mark doesn't actually like him? worse, what if mark saw him as a younger brother considering he always took care of him, jaemin and jisung.
he still remembers that fated day that they were all planning on vandalizing the castle walls even though the place was heavily guarded. mark arrived just in time to stop them and saved them from what could have been jail or worse, since seungcheol was king at the time. mark had saved their asses way too many times, more than donghyuck would like to admit.
"jeez. overthinking never got anyone anywhere" donghyuck whispered to himself. he took a few deep breaths and relaxed. this was mark we're talking about - he's civil and mature. if he doesn't like him, then he'll reject him in the nicest way possible. he balled his hands into a fist and raised his arm. he stared at his hand before making contact with the door seconds later.
he gulped nervously as he heard footsteps nearing the door. he waved his hands aggressively to calm his nerves down. the door then opened wide and mark was standing there, holding the doorknob with a smile on his face.
"hey donghyuck. what's up?" mark asked. he noticed the younger's anxious behavior and got worried. "is something wrong?"
donghyuck shook his head no, "nothing like that mark. can we talk about this inside?"
"yeah. come in" he said and stepped aside so that donghyuck could enter the household. the door shut closed behind him and then he heard footsteps, but they weren't mark's.
a shadow appeared from around the corner and then the person came into sight. donghyuck internally groaned. he was hoping mark would be alone.
"oh. i didn't realize you had company" donghyuck chuckled awkwardly. "you're renjun, right?"
"yeah. by the looks of it, you're donghyuck. mark's told me about you" renjun answered. behind the vampire, mark was telling renjun to shut up with hand signals but the petty werewolf just had to expose him.
"oh, is that so?" donghyuck chuckled once again. "i didn't know you talked about me mark" he said and hit mark lightly in the forearm. mark glared at renjun who only smiled proudly in return.
before anything else could be said, a loud roar was heard from outside. "oh! that reminds me. jaemin's holding dragon games and he wants all dragon riders to get their dragons and head to the arena in an hour"
"well, i better go get ready. prepare to lose mark" renjun clicked his tongue and did finger guns. he greeted donghyuck goodbye and then left the house. donghyuck sighed of relief once he heard the door fully close. he was finally alone with mark.
"so what did you need donghyuck? or is that all you needed to tell me?" mark asked and sat down on the nearest chair.
"no, actually. i wanted to ask you something" the vampire felt uncomfortable at the moment. he hated having to confess his feelings. but he pulled through. "how do you feel about me?"
the question certainly caught mark off guard. still, he answered with, "you're a great person. you always stuck by jaemin even though he can be a pain in the ass sometimes. you're powerful and amazing. why?"
"well, and don't get mad at him, but jaemin said that you like me" donghyuck said this slowly, not taking his eyes off of mark to see his reaction. he stared at him wide eyed for a few seconds, then relaxed. a chuckle escaped his lips, sort of sounding like a scoff, and he rubbed at his eyes. donghyuck couldn't tell if that was a good sign or not.
"of course he did. people can't keep secrets nowadays" mark retorted and leaned back in the chair. it was donghyuck's turn to go wide eyed. it was true? mark really does like him? wow!
"for what it's worth, i like you too" mark smiled warmly at him. his heart pounded in his chest. he longed to hear those words but in the end, it couldn't work out.
"but-" and there it is. another factor that donghyuck had considered. if he was going to say what donghyuck was thinking, there was a solution for the. if not, then he'll just go cry in the corner and forget he exists. "we can't be together. you know what will happen if we do and i can't leave jaemin alone"
"i was hoping you were going to say that" donghyuck breathed out in relief. a weight was lifted off his shoulders. mark stared at him confused. normally, one would be sad after hearing that. but not him. "jaemin said he's going to lift the rule. he said we can be together without fear of death"
"really? he said that? so we can-" donghyuck nodded at his questions.
"we can"
jaemin was on xiaodero's back after leaving the castle. he made his way to arena and flew over it while speculating everything. his servants were preparing everything and making sure that everything was in order. he figured that it was all okay and rode away. some riders were already going to get their dragons and others were getting their gear. jaemin saw a few people waving at him so he waved back. he had never seen the kingdom so enthusiastic before. it was refreshing.
