Chapter 9 - The Bridge

Joel's P. O. V.

—Present—

Shit. I knew I shouldn't ask. Andrea didn't say a word for hours now, she's just staring blindly out of the window, didn't even went to sleep. Right now we need to get to a brigde across some river here. It's the only way to Wyoming from here as far as I remember. We are near Nort Platte I think. Oh fuck it I have no idea where we are, all I need to know is that this road leads to that bridge. But as I got closer to the city I noticed the road is blocked. -"Oh, Shit!" I said. With that Andrea was brought back to reality and Ellie woke up. -"Well, fuck." Ellie yawned as she streched. -"What are we gonna do now? Can we move those cars or something?" Andrea asked. -"No we certanly cannot move those cars." I exhaled. -"Well, we have to go through the city." I turned the car and drove down from the highway. Wasn't long until some scavenger appeared infront of us on the road. I stopped the car and had a good look at him. He held his stomach. -"Please. Help me!" He begged. I just stared at him. -"Joel. Shouldn't we-" Ellie asked but I interupted her. -"Hold onto something. -"What?! Joel what are you doing we gotta help him!" Andrea said. -"He ain't even hu-" I tried explaining it to Andrea but she already opened the car's door and tried to get out. To stop her I stepped on the gas as hard as I could, and our car was headed straight for the guy. He noticed we didn't fall for his trick and pulled out a gun. BANG! BANG! Both of his shots missing us. Soon enough his friends came out of hiding and started throwing bricks and bottles at us. We drove right past them, but not long after I saw bus going at us from up the right hill. -"Watch out!" Ellie yelled but it was too late. CRASH! The bus hit the back of our car. I tried to stay on the road but the car turned and I drove straight into some store nearby, there we finally stopped because of some pillar we crashed into.

[*cough*cough*] -"Are you alright?" I asked the girls as I was collecting myself. -"Yeah." -"Yes." Answers came. -"Good, then get out of here, quick!"I said when I saw a man in the rearview mirror coming closer to us. Too late, one of the scavangers already grabbed Andrea around her shoulders and tried dragging her out of the car. -"Motherfucker! Unnggh!" Andrea tried to set herself free. -"Let go of her you chickenshit!" Ellie yelled and pulled out her knife. Unfortunatly another man broke the back window of the car and grabbed Ellie. -"Joel!" Desperately I grabbed Andrea's leg to stop them from dragging her out, my grip wasn't strong enough and it slipped. Not a second after a guy came to me and smashed my head against the steering wheel. He dragged me out and smashed my head against some glass window nearby. CRASH! As I was getting together from the hit, in a split second I noticed a big chunk of glass still sticking by the window. I imidietly knew that the guy wanted to impale my head there, so I grabbed the sides of the window and kept myself away. The guy and I were both struggeling to succeed in our goal, but I won. When I was in a good position I striked. I grabbed the guy's head and stole his idea about impaling me to that glass. After his neck his the glass all I could hear were desperate growling and hissing as he tried to breathe, unseccessfully. He stopped fighting.

-"Joel!" I heard Ellie scream, so I quickly turned around. Ellie just got hit to the face badly and started chocking her. -"Unhgr!" I looked towards another sound, it was Andrea fighting with some scavanger too. She is now pinned to some pillar and also being chocked by the scavanger. Shit! I need to make a decision. Fuck it! I quickly ran to Ellie and pushed the man off of her. I grabbed his head and smashed it against some counter. [cough, cough] Ellie was heavily breathing but still got up and pulled out her knife. -"Andrea!" She yelled as she saw her friend trying to fight the scavenger off. I ran towards them but before I could do something Andrea kicked the guy in the balls. As his grip weakened, thanks to the pillar behind her, with her legs she pushed herself foward and fell right onto the guy. Not long after she slipped his throat. Damn, she really knows how to protect her own hide. We nodded at each other and went back to the car, even though it's busted we still need our things. -"Catch your breaths, we need to go." I said to the girls as I handed them their backpacks. -"Look out!" Ellie yelled and not after a bullet flew right past us, we took cover. -"You're fucking dead!" A man yelled at us. -"After you!" Andrea replied and peaked out of her cover to shoot with her bow. Right to the chest. The man got on his knees and then fell lifelessly onto the ground. -"Good shot." Ellie said and Andrea just hummed in response. We searched our way through the buildings but somehow I got the urge to apologize. -"Um hey Andrea?" I started. -"Yeah?" She turned her face slightly towards me while still walking through a hallway of some building. -"I'm....I'm sorry about that back there." -"What do you mean?" I paused a little. -"You know.....that I didn't help you with that guy." She stopped and turned to me. -"Joel, you do not have to apologize for these kind of things. You had to make a desicion of who to safe, and you did. It's okay." I nodded. -"Thank you." -"Besides the way that I killed that guy was pretty cool, huh? Friend in the camp thought me." I laughed. -"Sure it was. But let's keep going."
