•a week later•Its been a week of Jack trying to talk to Zach. Every night at exactly 6:00, he would go over to the Herron house and sit outside Zach's room to talk to him. He always managed to get a few sentences out of the boy, but they were always saddening like 'go away' or 'I don't want to talk to you'.
Myta had managed to get Zach to join them for 2 family dinners, but the rest of the time she just delivered the food to his room.
Jack, and Zach's parents were beginning to lose hope, Zach refused to talk to anyone besides his mom and dad, and sometimes Jack. Jack didn't know what else he could do.
Jack walked into the Herron's house to talk to Zach again. He thought of an idea that might work.
"Hey Jack," Myta welcomed.
"Hi," Jack replied.
"He's in his room like usual," Myta explained. Jack nodded.
"I have a question. Does Zach still love the same foods that he did before?" Jack asked.
"So far yeah, he still loves Doritos and ice cream sandwiches, we haven't really introduced him to other snacks, we don't want to overwhelm him."
"Ok, thank you. I brought some ice cream sandwiches, I hoped he would still like them."
Jack walked up to Zach's room and sat outside of the door. "Hey Zach, I'm here again," Jack said through the white wooden door. "I got you ice cream sandwiches, do you want one?"
"Sure," a small voice called out. Jack smiled widely and pulled an ice cream sandwich from the small cooler in his arms. He just took them out of the freezer before he left so they weren't melted at all. Zach unlocked and opened his door just enough that Jack could hand him a sandwich. Zach quickly took it then closed and locked the door again.
Jack got himself one of the sweet treats and began to eat it.
Zach on the other hand just stared at the ice cream. He didn't know if he wanted to eat it. He sat down with his back against his door. The real reason why he wasn't opening up to Jack was that he didn't want to mess up. He was scared that he wouldn't be like how he was before, and that everyone would hate him for it. He felt fragile, he felt like one mess up could kill him. He didn't mean to be so stubborn, he wanted to let Jack into his life. But he was too scared.
"Is the ice cream good?" Jack asked quietly.
"Uh y-yeah, it's good. Thank you," Zach mumbled.
"No problem. How was your day?"
"Not that good. I was actually going to bed when you came," Zach forced out the lie. He wasn't tired, he knew he wouldn't be for a while, he just didn't want to slip up and say something he shouldn't while being with Jack.
"O-Oh ok, I guess I'll leave then. Good night Zach."
Zach didn't say anything, he just listened as Jack stood up and went back downstairs.

Jack walked into the house, he felt upset, but better than other nights.
"How did it go?" Jonah asked. That's the same question he asks every night when Jack comes home.
"Same as always. I don't think he ate the ice cream, he stuttered when he told me he liked it, he only stutters when he's lying," Jack rambled. Jonah frowned and pulled the blonde boy into a hug.
"You'll get there eventually, you're making a lot of progress. At the start of this week I doubt he'd even open his door to take an ice cream sandwich from you," Jonah said softly. Jack nodded to agree before pulling away.
He walked over to Daniel, who was cuddling Corbyn on the couch.
"Hey Jack," Daniel welcomed.
"Hey. I have an idea."
"What is it?"
"What if you went and talked to Zach?" Jack offered.
"Really?!" Daniel exclaimed.
"Yeah, I realized that you haven't seen him since the hospital, so you should talk to him. Talking to someone who's supposed to be your boyfriend must be overwhelming, so maybe just a best friend will make him more comfortable," Jack explained his theory.
"Only if you're okay with it Jack," Daniel said cautiously.
"Of course I'm okay with it, that's why I suggested it. I'll text Myta to let her know."
"Ok, thank you Jack."
"No problem."
•the next evening•
Daniel walked into the Herron household nervously. He was greeted by Myta and Josh at the door, they reassured him that everything would be okay before he went up to Zach's room.
Daniel sat outside of Zach's door and worked up the courage to talk. Before he could, Zach let out a few words.
"Hi Jack," Zach sighed.
"I'm actually not Jack," Daniel replied.
Zach scrunched his eyebrows together, the voice on the other side of the door sounded so familiar, he could've sworn he knew the person.
"C-Can you say something else?" Zach asked.
"Uh sure. Hi, I'm Daniel Seavey, your best friend, Jack wanted me to come here to talk to you today so you could be more comfortable," Daniel explained. Zach stood up and opened the door, he gasped when he saw his best friend sitting there.
"Oh my god, Dani!!" Zach exclaimed. Daniel stood up and quickly brought the younger boy into a hug.
"I've missed you Zach," Daniel said into the brunette's shoulder.
"I missed you too Dani," Zach replied. Daniel held Zach close, he was unbelievably grateful that Zach remembered him. Daniel couldn't help but feel guilty as well, he was only supposed to come talk to the boy, not have a reunion.
They pulled away from the hug and Zach smiled up at Daniel.
"I can't believe you remember me."
"Me either. So far I've only been able to remember my close family, but I'm glad I do. I don't know how I'd live without you."
Zach pulled Daniel into his room and sat on his bed. "Lets catch up, tell me everything!" Zach said excitedly.
Daniel chuckled then began explaining the past year or so of their lives.
•3 hours later•
It was now 9:00pm and Daniel decided to go home. He gave Zach one last hug before leaving his room. He walked downstairs with a huge smile.
"He remembers me," Daniel said to Josh and Myta.
"That's amazing sweetheart!" Myta exclaimed. She felt that Daniel was their new hope, he could help Zach get better.
"I'm going to head home now!"
Daniel exchanged his goodbyes with Zach's parents before getting into his car. As he started the grey Tesla, a thought came to his head.
How will he tell Jack?
