(1)Birthday(1)
I felt no urge to get out of my bed this morning. Honestly, that wasn’t that out of the norm for I had never been a morning person. The light from my window was annoyingly bright; I could see it even though my eyes were still stubbornly sealed shut. I could hear my mom knocking on my door as her voice drifted through the weak wood.
“Aurora, you need to wake up,” she called, hitting the door harder. “It’s your birthday; I made your favorite breakfast.”
A small smile drifted to my lips. My mom’s cooking was good, but she didn’t cook very often. “I’ll be up soon,” I groaned in reply, shoving my hands under my pillow as I slowly forced myself up and out of my bed. My eyes were still shut; I didn’t want to face the light. Instead I moved around my room and blindly got ready. My mom had left my door and was waiting at the kitchen. I knew I had to move fast for she wasn’t the most patient person on the block, I laughed as that fact rang true in my mind.
My two older brothers always had the knack for pressing the last buttons on my mom’s patience. “Hey mom,” I called, walking into the kitchen. The fresh pancakes filled my senses and I couldn’t wait to dig in. I blindly put my hands out in front of me and felt my way to my chair.
“What are you doing?” My mom asked, I could tell she was shaking her head in disbelief.
“I’m eating, duh.”
“No,” she laughed, “Why are you keeping your eyes shut?”
“Oh,” I whispered, stuffing my mouth with food so I could postpone answering, “Well, today is my birthday: My sixteenth birthday.”
“Well eat up,” my mom replied and I could tell she understood, “We have to leave in five minutes for the test. And don’t worry, Aurora, I’m sure you’ll be more like me instead of your father and brothers.”
I smiled, finishing my food. I held onto my mom’s shoulders, walking behind her and using her as my guide. I wish that the testing center was far, but it wasn’t. We were soon entering the building that everyone knew. It was placed at the Northern end of Section C so that it was easily accessed, a similar building stood at the Southern end.
“How many people,” I asked as we entered the waiting room for the test.
“Twenty, only three less than last year.” Only three, I could deal with that number. That meant that during the past year three people with my birthday either were brought in for a test under speculation or died. Both were likely, but sadly death was more so due to the conditions in the poorer sectors. “I’ll be waiting for you, like usual.”
With the parting words my mom gave me a quick kiss on the forehead before leaving me, standing in the waiting room with my eyes sealed shut. I pointed my face to the floor and slowly opened my eyes. I didn’t want to see anything, but I needed to find a chair to sit in until my name was called.
Not daring to look up I made my way to my seat. “Cameron Wish, Sector A.” I heard shuffling to my side as the boy moved towards the voice and back into one of the testing rooms. I didn’t look up, but I knew my name was coming up. The next three names were from Sector B, but then my name rang through the white room.
