There the captain sat. Tattered clothes, old crusted bones, and hollowed eyes stared out at nothing. I stopped breathing. Captain Nathaniel Flint, the dreaded scourge of a pirate, the legend himself, was long since dead. A layer of dust replaced his skin. His skeletal face, without expression, slumped downwards; his jaw slightly slacked. His gold tooth sparkled, reflecting the electric light.
"By the stars... It's really him." I gasped, frozen in place.
"In the flesh!" BEN started, chipperly, "Well, s-sort of, except for skin, organs, or anything that-that-that resembles flesh... that's not there." He gestured to the bones of the captain.
Jim got closer, morbid curiosity getting the better of him it seemed, inspecting the bleached skull of the legendary pirate. I was simply dumbstruck. So much had happened in only the past hour, yet my mind could only just barely keep up. I rested my hand on a sword, embedded in the wood of the ship, in an effort to keep myself upright. I almost felt like I was in a dream.
BEN, ignorant to my plight, continued to ramble on. "And yet, and yet it's so odd, ya' know? I mean, I remember there was some-something horrible Flint didn't want anyone else to know, but I-I just- I can't remember what it was."
A sickening crack reached my ears as I saw Jim force something out of Flint's deathly grip, causing a few of his fingers to simply break off. I winced at the sounds of bones tumbling down a small stack of gold.
"Oh, a mind is a terrible thing to lose!" BEN cried, head in his hands.
Yet what Jim held in his looked very familiar to a certain mutual metal friend. BEN, his back turned to us, couldn't see what the young man held up. There were magnetic ports on it's inside, all colour coded to the wires BEN was protruding from the back of his head. It was his mind. Or, his memory to be exact.
Jim smirked, excitedly walking over to the old robot. "BEN, I think I just found your mind. Hold still." He placed his free hand on BEN's head, trying to keep him from squirming.
"Aah!" Startled, he attempted to pull away from Jim's hold. "Jimmy, your-your hands are very, very cold up there and-!" And his mind snapped back into place.
His screens rapidly scrolled across the new data he received, turning from his normal green colour to bright blue. "Whoa! Hello." He blinked, a thoughtful look on his face as he rubbed his chin. "You know, uh, Jimmy, I was just thinking- I was just...think...!" I never knew I could see such joy on a robot before. BEN was smiling, pure excited bliss radiating from him. Jim grinned, happy for the old robot.
I couldn't help but smile too. As much as he annoyed me, I was glad he finally got his mind back. "That's great BEN!"
"It's all flooding back! All my memories! Right up until Flint pulled my memory circuit, so I could never tell anybody about his booby trap!" He gleefully yelled.
Wait-
BOOM! An explosion burst through the happy atmosphere; my head whipped around to find the source of the massive sound. "Speaking of which..."
The pipes that hung from the massive inner workings of the planet erupted in clouds of fire and smoke and debris. I could only stare upwards in horror as BEN rapidly explained.
