The Aftermath

As I pull into the
parking lot of my job, I see my co-worker Jewell waiting for me beside her car. She is holding an object in her hand that I cannot fully see. I get out of my car and walk up to her. The "object" turned out to be her hands waving. "Hey hey! So how did last night go with you and Raye?"

"To be completely honest with you Jewell, it was horrible."

"Well then, spare me the details."

"But this morning was just fantastic."

"What? You act like he bought you the world or something."

"No.... but he did buy me this beautiful diamond bracelet."

Jewell stood there with a longing look in her face.

"Aww! Lucky! My husband never bought me anything like that for my birthday or for anything period. How'd you turn out so fortunate" she said in a mocking tone.

"I don't know. Anyway Raye decided to stay home from work today. I wonder what he has planned."

"Girl knowing him, he probably booked SoMo to sing to you for the rest of the day when you get home."

"Ha! You're kidding, but that would be great!"

The first few hours went by quickly. On my lunch break, my phone rang and the caller ID read Giovanni. "Happy birthday Gen!"

"Thanks Gio. Please tell me you're going to be able to make it for my birthday this year?"

"I'm sorry Genesis, I won't be able to make it this year"

I stood there with my hopes crushed. I could feel the tears surfacing in my eyes as I fought to respond. "No. It's okay I just thought that since you haven't made it for the past five years and this is your last couple months that they might let you off just this once."

"I'm sorry Gen. I didn't mean for this to happen. I was supposed to be leave but they needed me and ordered me to stay."

"This was supposed to be the year you came. I'm sick of not being able to see you for all these years. The only reason that I haven't forgotten how you look is because you face time me every now and then and I screenshot them. I hate the fact that I never get to see you. You're never here to witness what happens. I'm your only other family, remember. So it kills me that you're not here."

"I'm sorry I'll make it up to you Gen I..."

"What do you mean you'll make it up to me? It's my birthday Gi"

"Look I'm sorry okay! Is that what you want me to say huh? I've said it like a million times already."

"I don't want just an 'I'm sorry' from you. I need you to be here Gi. With your baby sister. It's not fair to me..."

"Do you think it's fair to me? Huh? You think it's not hard for me that I'm not there? There's not one day that I wish I was there to look over you and protect you. What about when it's my birthday and you aren't able to be here? You don't think it hurts me too Gen? You know what, if you don't want to cooperate then that's just fine. I'm done talking! Have a nice birthday!"

There was a moment of complete silence and confusion. If I had known that Giovanni felt this way, then I would have never scolded him. I feel so bad about that I don't even notice that it was time to get back to work and I end up sitting in the lunch room for another hour and a half. I snapped out of my trance when, "Miss Gianni? I presume you have a reason for skipping out on your work while everyone else is working."

"Um n...no sir I..I was just about t..."

Before I could even finish my sentence my boss, Mr. DeBello kissed me full on the lips. I stood there in shock. As he stepped back I recognized a cocky grin on his face like he just got won the lottery or something. It took my brain an eternity to figure out what had just happened. I stepped back with nothing but utter disgust painted across my face. I was almost like the further I stepped back, he seemed to be getting closer and closer. I turned around and pretended to get some coffee. To my surprise, it was still piping hot.

As I reached up to grab a cup, I felt his body press against the back of mine. "Gen, I have to say, you are quite the alluring woman. The kind that makes a man like me think about you night after night. The kind that makes a man like me want you more than anything in the world. I want you Genesis more than this job, more than money, more than my life."

"Well I don't want you Darian so stop it and get away from me! I have a fiancé! Did you forget?

"I don't care about that foolish excuse for a man that you call your fiance. Why can't you realize that you deserve better than some scum off the street."

By this time his body was pressed harder on my skin than ever before as if what he was doing would somehow change my opinion on the subject or something like that. Luckily, during the irrelevant conversation, I managed to pour a cup of the hot coffee. I turned around and acted like I was about to kiss him back. He gradually leaned in to receive the gift but to his surprise I grabbed the steaming cup and threw the coffee in his face.

He cringed and writhed in pain on the floor of the break room. I briskly made my way to the front of the building towards the doors when I heard my phone ring. It was a call from Jewell. Before I answer, Mr. DeBello was standing in front of me. His face still red from the coffee. "I swear if you tell anyone about this you'll be out on the streets," he said while having a death grip on my forearm, "With nothing do you hear me? Nothing! I'll make your life a living hell!"

With that he marched tall. Face probably still in unbelievable pain, but never looking back as though he had won the battle.

"Don't worry about that!" I yelled, "I quit!"

The battle was over, but the war had just begun.
