Tonight I stayed at Dom’s again. Luckily his mom allowed me to stay as long as I needed to, as long as we promised to get up on time for school the next morning. I was really thankful, I couldn’t stay near Lucas for one more second. I still couldn’t believe Mason kept this from me. For me this is quite a big deal! I ran my hand through my hair, which was still slightly blue. The color had almost grown out and mixed with my natural brown-black. Dominic was lying next to me in his bed, wrapped in his soft blanket and was asleep. I put my headphones on carefully, in order to not wake him up. I closed my eyes and listening to the music I drifted into my thoughts. Just being close to my boyfriend made me feel the best things.

Everything about you is how I’d wanna be

Your freedom comes naturally

Hey that was pretty good! I slowly crawled out of bed and took my songbook out of my backpack, where I wrote down all of my lyrics.

Everything about you resonates happiness

Now I won't settle for less

Give me all the piece and joy in your mind

I was so absorbed in finding a suitable melody for the lyrics I just came up with, that I didn't even notice my vibrating phone. Suddenly the feeling in my pocket ripped me out of my thoughts. I pulled it forth and Stacy’s name lit up on the screen. Why was she calling me at that time? I walked out of Dom’s room and picked up the call.

“Stacy?”, I asked.

“Yeah, hi Matt.”, said the girly voice at the other end of the line. “Listen uhh, could you maybe come over and walk me home? I was at my friend’s house and kinda forgot about the time. And you know the area around here isn’t that save at night.”

I chuckled. “Yeah sure I’m coming, where you at?”

“I’ll send you my location, hold on. And… please hurry, my mom is already furious.”

I chuckled again. “I’m on my way don’t worry.”

I ended the call and wrote a quick note for Dom, in case he was looking for me at some point. Then I climbed out of the window. Dom always left it open a crack so I could leave at any time, if I needed to. The fresh night air felt cool on my warm body and I took a deep breath. In the black sky you could see some stars and the moon seemed almost round and illuminated the dark street in a light blue. Although the darkness wasn't a problem for me, I found the moment kind of magical. I checked again the location Stacy had sent me and started walking over the rooftops. In the distance I could hear the faint rustling of waves in the quiet night, although the sea was a few miles away. Finally, I came to a stop on top of a big house where Stacy was waiting for me at the door. I jumped off the roof and landed silently next to her. "Hey.", she said with a smile, "Sorry that I asked you here so suddenly." “Oh, nevermind. It wasn't like I had anything better to do than watch Dominic sleep.”, I laughed. “Oh you were at his?”, asked Stacy, as we started to walk to her house. “Yeah… I’m not setting one foot back in my home, as long as Lucas is there.”, I said, kicking a stone on the pavement. “Is he really that bad?”, asked the girl walking next to me. “He seems like a cute guy.” I inhaled sharply. “Well, the issues we have are very personal. This goes way back. And I really don’t want to talk about it right now.” “Okay, you don’t have to if you don’t want to.”, said Stacy and wrapped her arm around mine. "Sorry, I'm a bit afraid of the dark.", she laughed embarrassed and pulled me a little closer to her. "It's okay, I'm here to help," I said, putting my arm around the girl. Like this we walked for a few minutes in silence. However, after we turned into the next street, a strange noise penetrated my ears. It sounded like a crowd of people in a tight space. It came from the side street a few meters in front of us. Great... side streets... and then we saw them. Several pairs of bright red eyes flashed at us from the darkness. I stood protectively in front of my friend and slowly we passed the alley. "Who are they?" Stacy asked frightened, clutching the fabric of my black hoodie. “Insane vampires. They’re not very good company to have.”, I said, my glance fixed at the red points in the darkness. “They’ll leave us alone if we don’t do anything… Hopefully...” “You don’t sound very convinced…”, whispered the girl behind me. Suddenly I felt a movement next to me. A pair of red eyes stared into my blue ones. I was just able to fend off the attack of the vampire, but this has now also lured the others out. About seven vampires slowly crept towards us, who pierced us with their hungry looks. We had our backs to the wall, there was no other way but to fight our way through. But was I strong enough for that? There was only one thing, I had to scare them off and then run away.
But before I could do anything, my instincts kicked in once again. I felt my fangs grow and I slightly growled at our enemies. I needed to protect my friend at any costs. Protect. This was the only word that was left in my head. Protect. My body just moved on its own. I jumped up in the air and did a roll and some sort of black-blue smoke formed around me. But instead of my feet, there were two pairs of big, furry paws landing on the ground. My pointy ears were flattened, my tail swayed dangerously back and forth and two rows of sharp, intimidating teeth were bared at the predators. I snarled loudly and the vampires actually backed off. Little by little they disappeared into the dark. “Matt?” I heard a whisper from behind me. My ears twitched and I turned my head around, looking at my friend with big, blue glowing puppy eyes. I slightly whimpered and nudged her with my wet black nose. “You okay?”, I asked. I got startled a bit, because my mouth wasn’t moving. The voice sort of came out of my head. “I… think so…”, stuttered Stacy and ran her hand through my dense black-brown fur. “I… didn’t know you could shape-shift.” “Yeah me neither.”, I laughed a bit embarrassed. “You’re so fluffy!”, sighted the girl and buried her face in my fur. “I’m taking you as my pet!” “Hey, I’m only Dom’s pet!”, I protested and a quick snarl escaped my throat. “Yes, yes, I get it.”, grinned Stacy. “Come on now, let’s get you home.”, I said and lay down, so she could get on my wolf back.

“Please don’t tell anyone about this, I wanna mess with them first.”, I chuckled, after we finally arrived at our destination. “Okay, but only if you allow me to give you belly rubs for all eternity.”, grinned the girl. “Okay yeah whatever.”, I chuckled and disappeared in the dark. Before I went back to Dom, I first messed a bit with my new power. I also managed to turn into a cat, a crow and a bat. Okay this was awesome. I flew into Dom’s room, he was still asleep. I changed into my cat-body and curled up next to him. This is gonna be funny when he wakes up.
