the Battle

They loved.

And then they lost.

That's what we always say.

But our listeners, they never knew.

There was a battle in between.

This battle was just a skirmish at first.

Who would get choice for dinner?

But then it started to hurt.

It started to matter who was the winner.

The fight became about I-Love-Yous

And best valentine's gift

And best kisses, too.

The best man, and then the best friend.

There came the question,

Is he sleeping with another woman?

And then the war was a war of time

When I'll be yours.

When you'll be mine.

When she could cook dinner.

When he'd come home.

He didn't know that when he left

She felt so alone.

Because boy, did he know how to leave.

For hours. A day. She hoped for never more.

Then he'd be driven home by a friend.

Stumble in through the door.

With tequila on his breath.

And lust in his eyes.

Their petty squabbles,

Escalated to fist fights.

To him winning.

To things she didn't want to do.

But she couldn't stop him,

she didn't want another bruise.

And her family wondered,

Was this his doing?

And after years

She asked for help.

After an ocean of tears,

After the alone by herself.

She wasn't alone anymore.

Soon the fight began to die down.

He was outnumbered, she'd evened the score.

Her life began to turn around.

His life went downhill more.

There was nothing left.

No love, no hate.

Just plenty of drinks.

And more love to waste.
