Daniel was buzzing with excitement as the small group of four made their way up the creaky stairs to the entrance of the mansion. He had his phone out, ready to take pictures and videos of the house as well as his friend's reactions. (It wasn't a secret that Taki was a scaredy-cat. And Ni-ki had a particularly loud scream. Daniel knew he'd collect enough blackmail material to last him a month or two).
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Taki piped up uneasily from behind Kei.
"Yes! Stop being a pussy and come on." Daniel didn't wait for his response, opening the door and skipping inside. Behind him, Ni-ki gingerly stepped into the building, as if the floor would give out under him at any second. Kei ruffled his hair once, following behind the first two, Taki practically part of him at that point.
Once they were inside, the door creaked shut by itself, sending the room into complete darkness. Taki jumped onto Kei's back with a little shriek. There were a few seconds of what sounded like someone ruffling through their bag before a little light flickered on from a small flashlight Ni-ki had brought with him. Daniel followed in suit, turning on the light on his phone. He spun in a circle, inspecting the foyer. His gaze finally settled on the rotting stairs, a smile making its way onto his face.
"We're going upstairs," he said with finality, bounding up the stairs before anyone could protest.
"Hey!" Kei yelled after him. "Daniel, come back here right now or so help me, I'll force-feed you soggy cereal for a week!"
Daniel took the threat with a grain of salt, continuing up the stairs then turned into the hallway on his right. The walls in the narrow corridor were musty, wallpaper chipped from old age. There were multiple doors littered throughout the hallway, a dusty window resting at the far end. Daniel made his way to the nearest door, placing his hand on the knob, but not before checking if the rest of his group had joined him yet. He expected to see Kei piggybacking Taki, with Ni-ki cowering behind the two – pretending not to be as scared as he was – but it seemed that they hadn't caught up yet, so he continued into the room alone.
The room was in worse shape than the foyer, every surface covered in a thick layer of dust. He inhaled some of it, erupting into a fit of sneezes. He leaned back against the door to stabilize himself, only to accidentally shut the door.
"Ooh boy, we need to get Kei up in here. There's more dust than air in this place good god," he spoke to himself, waving his empty hand in front of his face in an effort to get rid of the dust flying around in the air.
Daniel moved further into the big room. He passed a hand over the peeling spines of books packed on an equally as old looking bookshelf, pausing at a maroon book that looked younger than the rest and was significantly thinner. He picked it off the bookshelf, inspecting the cover. There was no title, and upon flipping it open Daniel found out that it was a diary of some sorts.
