War Poem Written For School
When I was younger,
I dreamt of a gun.
To help my country
Would be so much fun.
And my mother would say:
"You'll get yourself done!"
I was warned against it
But I signed up for the war.
I was much too young
- But nobody saw.
And my mother would shout:
"It's against the law!"
I kept on persisting
- She finally caved in.
I packed only one bag,
And left with a grin,
And my mother cried:
"Stay here, don't sin."
At first it was good,
But now my tears fall.
"Get a move on lad!"
The officers would call.
And my mother would write:
"Stay safe, most of all."
We went Over the Top,
And the guns did fire.
To stay freshly alive,
Was my desperate desire.
I told mother I was fine,
And she wrote: "You're a liar"
One unfortunate day,
I sat taking a rest,
And to my sudden shock,
I was shot in the chest.
And my mother thought
That I was doing my best.
At home it was dark,
When an officer stopped by.
My mother was anxious
For her letter's reply.
The news was revealed
And she started to cry.
"He was so young!
I knew he would die;
That death would greet him,
Before I could say goodbye"
It was true she was broken,
And no person could deny.
I've watched from above,
To this very day.
I was always sorry
As I watched her pray.
I should have listened,
Before going away.
Wars are terrible and cause people to crack.
Once you are killed, there is no going back.
