Be who you are and say what you mean because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. [Dr. Seuss]
Chapter 2
"There's a guy staring at you," giggles Evelyn as she points across the bustling food court to someone I can't see over her red head. I look around her with a fry sticking out of my mouth to a familiar looking boy. He turned his head to the side quickly so all I can see his bronze hair. His eyes flickers to mine for a quick second but it's enough. The fry drops from my mouth and lands silently on the tiled floor. I quickly swivel back around in my chair and start to gather up my things.
"Evelyn we need to leave now," I say impatiently as I shove everything that's not edible into my large tote bag. I glance up to see that Evelyn is doing the same.
"What's the rush?" she asks me as she zips up her tote. I sigh and glance up at her timidly.
"This is going to make me sound crazy but I had a dream about that guy last night," I say as I grab the food in one hand and her hand in the other.
"You two know each other?" she asks suddenly as I tug her towards the mall entrance.
"No, that's the crazy part. I've never seen him in my life. Well, other than in my dream," I say as we quickly dodge people. Evelyn tugs on my hand to stop me from squashing a little boy with an ice-cream cone.
"Ada, look at me," she says making me turn around to face her dark blue eyes. "You're parents haven't told you yet, have they?" she asks over the roar of the crowd.
I look at her funny. "Told me what?" I ask. She just shakes her head.
"Follow me," she yells over the crowd and starts to move to the right. I follow her naturally into what looks like a storage room. As I open up the door, I glance behind my back to see the silver-eyed boy watching me. I shiver and close the door. Light floods into the small janitor's closet as I look around quickly spotting Evelyn in between two trashcans near the light switch.
"Okay, talk," I say while leaning against the door. "Why are you acting so strange?" I ask her as I see her hands clenching and then unclenching.
Giving a short laugh Evelyn looks me in the eyes. "I was never supposed to be the one who tells you! You're parents are supposed to tell you," she mumbles as she paces around in the small, cluttered room. "Even though they're not your real parents, they still are in charge of you," she mutters making me freeze on the spot. I reach out and grab her small shoulder stopping her pacing.
"What do you mean my parents aren't my parents?" I ask her as I look in her deep blue eyes. She blew out a sigh through her small freckled nose. She got out of my grasp and turns towards a little workbench. She pats the empty spot beside her and I walk timidly over to her. The hard wooden bench is sturdy to my surprise.
"Okay," she says as she turns towards me, "you're going to listen to me and not interrupt me at all, got it?" she asks and I nod my head at her. I wonder if there was some type of drug in our hamburger meat, because I'm actually listening to her. "So, I'll just get straight to it. You weren't born in the United States, or even earth. You're from a place just like Earth in every shape and form, except for the people called Capella. The people there have magic and are ruled by a powerful queen." I look at her strangely but let her continue without interrupting. "Queen Kyra, their most recent queen and most powerful, had a beautiful baby girl on January 23rd 1996. The young baby grew up into a cute toddler and into a lovely young girl. On the eve of her eighth birthday, though, something terrible happened." Evelyn's eyebrows scrunch up. "The young girl whom was just realizing her potential spun a tale of the future, of her future. Queen Kyra and King Ayden were so shock and horrified at their young daughter's future that they sent her off to Earth with a protector and a promise that they would see each other on the eve of her fifteenth birthday. They also assigned two powerful witches to watch after her and treat her like a daughter," Evelyn looks at me to see how I'm digesting all of this.
"Let me guess, you're going to say I'm their daughter," I say while laughing at her.
"You are," she says and looks me in the eyes. I look away, reach into my bag, grab the McDonalds doggie bag with the bad hamburgers in it, and toss it into the trash. "Why did you do that?" she asks me curiously.
"There were drugs in them that's why! Why else would you tell me something as ludicrous as that?" I ask her as I stand up and wipe the dirt off my purple dress. "Now, I'm going to drive you to the hospital and then we're going to sue McDonalds because they drugged you," I say as I hold out a hand towards my shock best friend.
Evelyn looks up at me as if I've finally went off the deep end. "I'm not on drugs, those hamburgers weren't tainted, and I am telling you the truth," she says seriously. I look at her with a little smile.
"Come on, do you really expect me to believe you?" I ask her and she nods.
"We have been best friends forever," she says while smiling at me.
"I still don't believe you," I say as I cross my arms. Evelyn's smile drops and she gets this look on her face that only means one thing.
"Fine, I give up!" she says as she throws her hands in the air and I smile at her.
"I knew you were joking," I say and she gets a crazy smile on her face.
"Oh no, I wasn't joking," she says as she grabs my hand and jerks open the door. "You're going to go talk to your parents and they'll tell you," she says as she jerks me too hard and my hand slips from her hand even though she doesn't notice. Evelyn starts to run towards the entrance while still 'holding' my hand behind her. I can't help but laugh its pretty ridicules to tell you the truth; her red, curly hair bouncing around her as she grips the air behind her. I chuckle once more as I head towards the entrance. My friend has just gone over to the crazy side. She even forgot that I drove her here! I'm not watching where I'm going when I slam into someone hard and go sprawling on the floor making my head slamming against the concrete.
"Watch where you're going will ya?" he asks rudely and I glare at him not really seeing him though. My heads spinning as I sit up. I rub my head softly as I close my eyes. "Oh, I'm so sorry!" he says as I feel someone crouching near me. Why does his voice seem so familiar? I feel warm hands grasping my shoulders trying to keep from wobbling over again.
"First you're rude and now you're sorry? Are you bipolar?" I ask angrily as I open my eyes and close them again after seeing the world spinning again.
"You haven't changed a bit," the guy chuckles at me. "Here you need to stand up," he says as he switches his weight around.
"No," I say quietly as I feel nausea coming up. "I just need to gain my balance again," I say as I clamp my mouth shut trying to keep from spewing my lunch all over him. It's official; this is the worst birthday ever. I open my eyes again to see that the world is still finally. "Okay, now help me up, slowly," I warn him as he grabs my hand and yanks me up quickly. "I said slowly!" I screech as I bite my tongue to keep from puking.
"Sorry," he chuckles as I look down at the unmoving floor to keep from getting dizzy again.
"Are you a retard or something?" I ask him rudely as I look up at him for the first time. I yank my hand away from his and back up a little. Standing in front of me is the one and only silver-eyed creeper.
