Chapter 5

I stared in fear as the Minotaur roared in anger.  Its meaty hands reaching up to punch the ceiling.  "Ada," Asher says while getting into a fighting stance, "you need to leave now."

"H-How do you suggest I do that?" I ask frightened.  The Minotaur reared back at my voice making me cringe into the sink.   My breathing started to get more rapid as the Minotaur took a lumbering step into the kitchen.

"There's a portal in Lilly's room," Evelyn says making me stare at her.  I just realized something; Evelyn's a part of this too!  Wow, I'm a smart one.

"Pay attention Ada!" Asher says making me blush.  He's annoying, but he's right.   My brain seems to be on slow at the moment and little to nothing makes sense to me.

"It's under her bed.  Go, now!" Evelyn says as a glowing sword appears in her hands.  Holy crap.  I look around at the other two just to see similar, golden swords glowing as the Minotaur gets closer.  It bellows at us and I hear intakes of breath.  10 yards away, then 8 yards, and finally, he's standing within 5 feet in front of Ryan.

"Go Ada, now!" commands Ryan as he runs at the Minotaur.  I watch in shock as his sword collides with the Minotaur's furry arm.  The Minotaur roars in pain and throws his arm back sending Ryan through the wall.

"Ada habla ingles o espanol?" Asher asks sarcastically as he charges at the Minotaur.  Asher's sword didn't even make purchase on the Minotaur's arm before he's thrown through the glassless door.

"This is your cue to go!" screams Evelyn as she sprints her way to the Minotaur letting out an, "Ahhh!" all the way to him.

"Evelyn don't!" I finally cry as she hits into the Minotaur.  Before he could slam into her, though, she rolled under his meaty arm and stabbed him in the side.  He swiftly turns around before she has time to pull out her sword successfully lodging it in his side.  She ducks under his legs and stands between him and me.  Bellowing in pain, the Minotaur takes out the sword and sends it soaring through the air.  It hits the wall right near Asher's head making me sigh in relief.  I thought he was a goner.

"Freaking leave Ada!" cries Evelyn as she crouches in front of me as the Minotaur comes closer.  I swear a smile was on his bullish face.  Reaching out quickly, he clamps a hand onto her throat and lifts her in the air.  Trying her best to get out of his grip, she kicks trying to hit him, but he held her out of the way.  I watch horrified as Evelyn twists around in his grip.  "Go!" she gasps out as her face turns a hideous purple shade.  I stand up on shaky legs and try to make my way to the door.

The Minotaur sees me, though, and throws Evelyn to a wall making her scream in pain.  Tears fog my eyes.  Why didn't I get out earlier?  Why did I have to freeze?  Stupid slow brain!  The Minotaur rears up making me scramble from my hands and knees.  I stare up in shock as he lowered his head and start to stomp his feet.  I've watched enough movies to know what's going to happen next.

I look between him and the door four feet away from me.  Would I be able to make it?  There's only one way to know.  Screaming, I sprinted towards the door as the Minotaur roared and ran after me.  One foot, nine inches, the door!  I slammed into the door and fell back onto my butt.  Urgh, wrong way!  I look back to see the Minotaur a foot away from me and he's still gaining.  I have no clue what got over me, but suddenly, I'm in the crouching position and ready for a fight.  I glance around the large kitchen to see one of the golden swords laying a few yards away.  Okay, I can do this.  Deep breaths now.

The Minotaur leaned down to hit me, but I jumped straight up using his head as a springboard and twirled around in the air and land on the balls of my feet.  Whoa, now that was cool!  I rolled over to the sword and picked it up weighing it in my hand.  Thank the lord for the fencing classes I took when I was ten!  I turned around to see a very mad Minotaur.

"Bring it hamburger," I growl.  Crap, I'm going psycho.  The Minotaur roared back and came charging at me with its black, glistening sharp claws extended.  He swings his furry arm at me and I roll away from it and stab him in the chest.  I yank the sword out before he can do the same trick he did with Evelyn.  Evelyn!  Gosh, how could I have forgotten all about the others?  I'm a great friend!  I glance around to see them unconscious.  I just hope they're still breathing.

The Minotaur stands up to its full height making his head hit the lights.  Sparks fly from his head and he starts to shake.  Well, here's my golden chance!  I stand up quickly and drive the sword into his stomach making him roar in pain.  Crude, that's not killing him!  What kills him?

"An element," Asher croaks from the corner.  I look up quickly.  Element, what's an... ohh.

"But I don't have one!" I cry out worriedly as the Minotaur's head keeps on frying.  I look at hit disgusted.  That's going to be one fried hamburger.

"Ya, you do.  You're the princess, now start acting like one!" Asher says before he slumps against the wall unconscious once again.  I look around hoping to see mom and dad.  I wonder what happened to... focus Ada!  No time for a wandering mind!

Okay, okay, what could be my element?  Well, I can be pretty angry and I do like fire.  What the heck, let's try!   I focused all my strength on the already glowing sword.  I imagined all the heat from my body flowing to my hands and then to my sword catching it on fire.  I shivered as I felt suddenly tired.  I opened up my eyes slowly and almost drop the flaming sword.  Maybe they aren't crazy maybe this is real.

I lift up the now heavy sword, plunge it into his body, and fall to my knees.  I take in a deep breath as my head starts to pound.  I close my eyes and reopen them immediately seeing a burning Minotaur roaring in pain, the flaming sword melting into his skin.  Urgh, that's not a pretty sight.  I glance around and see Ryan and Asher standing up shakily.  Oh, now they decide to wake up!  Their eyes roam around the room trying to find me, or Evelyn.  They can't see me though, I'm behind the counter.  The smell of burning hamburger makes me want to gag.  My vision getting blurry makes me want to fall asleep, but I know that I have to get their attention before falling asleep.

I get up painfully and start army crawl to the other side of the marble counter.  My body feels like it just got ran over by a bulldozer.  I cough painfully as the smoky air fill my lungs.  I turn the corner and slump against the floor.  The last thing I see before I pass out it is Asher running towards me with tears in his eyes.  Why would he be crying?  Oh, ya, probably because of the smoke.  Ya, that's it.
