"Bye-bye!" cried Oikawa, putting on his shoes as he left the house in a hurry, biting the milk bread.
"Iwa chan! Wait for me!" he yelled, running like a toddler, chasing after his friend, Iwaizumi sighed heavily and shook his head, slapping the back of Oikawa's head as he approached him.
"Dumbass, how can you wake up late for our match?" he frowned, as he pulled Oikawa's wrist to make him walk faster, "I couldn't hear the alarm~ I'm sorry~" He whined, looking at Iwaizumi with his puppy eyes, begging for mercy.
No one can resist those puppy eyes, not even Iwaizumi, so he sighed and walked faster, "Iwa chan~ Don't pull me~" he whined again, he pouted and pushed himself away from Iwaizumi's grip, "I can walk by myself." He ran towards the gymnasium with his volleyball backpack, finishing his milk bread quickly, as Iwaizumi followed him, he giggled like a child, "For no reasons, I'm quite relaxed!" he cried, with his cheery smile, Iwaizumi smiled, "Don't get hurt though!" he warned, following Oikawa's speed.
~
The loud whistle echoed through the gymnasium, it was silent, the other half of the crowd cheered loudly, and the other half was silent.
Oikawa slapped the back of Iwaizumi's back, walking out of the gymnasium with his belongings, as his teammates did the same, the coach sat on the bench, not saying a word as Shiratorizawa cried with happiness.
Iwaizumi took his volleyball bag and followed Oikawa, trying to convince himself that everything is okay."Hey Oikawa, let's... let's go to the ramen restaurant," said Iwaizumi quietly, avoiding eye contact with him. Oikawa nodded, "Is Sumi chan coming?" he asked, with a weak smile on his face. Iwaizumi shook his head, "She won't." he said blankly, he shrugged a little and pat Oikawa's shoulder, as a placating gesture.
The brunette boy smiled and nodded, "You go first, I want to go the washroom..." Iwaizumi said weakly, so Oikawa left the gymnasium by himself. As he left, Iwaizumi turned around and saw Sumire standing far away, she smiled weakly as Iwaizumi approached her.
"Hey-" said Sumire softly, but before she can finish her sentence, Iwaizumi laid his head on her shoulder, sobbing like a baby. It shocked Sumire so much she jumped a little as soon as the spiked haired boy buried his head on her shoulder, she blushed and patted his head, comforting him.
"It's okay... we are still in Middle School... you'll get more chances..." she said softly, calming him as she now ruffled his hair. Soft sobbing could be heard, Sumire could feel his heart pounding, he soft breathing and his sniffing.
"Iwa chan-" said Oikawa from afar, he paused and saw his best friend, crying and burying his head on a girl's shoulder, he didn't know that Iwaizumi would let anyone see him being weak except him... at least he thought so.
Sumire looked at Oikawa in despair, not sure what to do, but the boy just forced a smile and left. Sumire frowned at the sight of this. she tried to pull Iwaizumi away from her but he was unexpectedly strong, "Hajime, Tooru is out-"
"I know," he said in a raspy voice, interrupting Sumire's sentence, she patted his head and she tried to pull him away again, but he didn't move a bit.
"Hajime." she said softly as Iwaizumi sniffed a little, "He is waiting for you outside."
"I like you."
It was very quiet for a moment, no one spoke, they were just standing there with Iwaizumi's head laid on Sumire's shoulder. Soft thunders could be heard, the sound of the rain slamming on the windows of the volleyball stadium was somewhat soothing, it calmed Iwaizumi as he lifted his head and faced Sumire, blushing hot red.
"S-sorry about that..." Iwaizumi apologised, rubbing his eyes from his tears, he smiled with a small frown on his face, not sure what to do anymore. Sumire blushed harder, "N-no wait-"
"I... I like... you too..."
The stadium was silent yet again, the music that the rain had created soothe both of them down, Sumire smiled and she hugged the boy tightly, blushing like a tomato.
"Uh... n-now what-" asked Iwaizumi awkwardly, scratching the back of his head, influenced by Oikawa's usual habit.
"Sh-shut up..." Sumire said smiling, "Don't make it more awkward..."As the two of them hugged each other, Oikawa peeped from one of the windows, his usual fluffy brown hair became a dull, darker colour due to the raindrop dropping on it, his dark blue and white uniform was soaked wet as well, revealing a faint portion of his torso. He smiled and shook his head, walking away from the stadium.
As he walked away slowly, he could hear his own soft sobbing, it was silent and weak at the same time, but he wasn't sure why he was crying. He wiped his tears away, which didn't make a difference as the raindrops and his tears looked the same.
"I support you... I support you... I support you..." Oikawa repeated those words to himself a few times, mumbling softly, "I support..." he paused for a moment, weeping again, "you..."
~
"Tooru, we want to give you something, c-come!" said Oikawa's mother, leading him to their living room with his father sitting on the couch with a box in his hands. "Daddy? Mommy? What is it?" Oikawa asked, sitting on the couch next to his father. His father handed him the box, "Open it.", as the brunette boy opened the box carefully, his eyes gleamed with surprise.
"A phone?" He asked, not sure how to react, but he smiled happily, looking at his parents. His mother nodded, patting his back, "You're 13 now, and we figured out that you need a phone for emergency and to call us, so..."
Oikawa jumped, he hugged his parents, smiling warmly, "thank you so much... today was so difficult for me... I..." he started weeping, overwhelmed by all the things that had happened today.A few hours later, he decided to go to bed, he hugged his parents one more time and kissed their cheeks, running to his bedroom like a toddler with his new phone on his hand.
As he walked inside his bedroom, he approached the window frame and cried, "Iwa chan~"Iwaizumi quickly heard him and Oikawa threw the paper cup to him, pulling the red string, "Iwa chan, guess what! I finally got a new phone!" Oikawa said happily, he smiled and paused for a moment, remembering what happened in the afternoon.
Iwaizumi smiled, "So I guess you can add me in your contacts?"
Oikawa nodded, he had always been jealous that Iwaizumi had a phone before him, but now that he too has one, he was really proud of it.
After they exchanged phone number, Iwaizumi sighed suddenly, as if he was about to say something that's serious."I started... I started going out with S-Sumire..."
Oikawa giggled, and forced a smile, trying his best to keep his usually cheery face, "I told you that you can do it!"
Iwaizumi smiled, "Thanks for supporting me."
Oikawa paused for a moment, not knowing what to say. Both of them were silent for a moment, not saying a word until Oikawa finally decided to say something.
"I- I guess that this will be the last time that we use our paper cups to chat?" he asked, scratching the back of his head, Iwaizumi jumped a little, he wasn't expecting that from Oikawa, they have been using these paper cups ever since they were 8, it just seemed unreal that they are using phones to chat with each other instead.
He shrugged a little, and nodded, "Yea... I guess so..."
"Then let's chat longer! A memorial service for our paper cups!" Oikawa said cheerfully, trying to stay positive for his friend.
Iwaizumi chuckled, and so they talked and talked, they chatted until midnight, and it was amazing.
That day, they lost to Shiratorizawa.
That day, they moved on and grew up.
That day, they say goodbye to their childhood.
But, things change, so the only way to go through everything is to accept the truth.
