Chapter 3

I was very delighted with my new look. I even went to the mall nearest my condo to show it off. I had people doing a double take. Guys mainly. They were all smiles.
I found a restaurant with a bar on the first floor and decided I'd have a drink as the new me. The moment I sat down the bartender came up to me smiling. "So what will it be?"
I smiled and choose a blush instead of a red wine this time. I went to pay for the drink but he waved me off. He pointed to a guy a few seats away from me. "He already paid for it."
For the first time ever, I accepted a drink offer from a stranger because I choose the drink and watched the bartender make it. I know its a mall bar, but you can never be too careful these days.
I raised my glass to the generous man who I finally fully saw and smiled. The man was a dirty blonde. More of the refined surfer dude type. He was even wearing a business suite and talking to other business men.
Half the glass gone and the one thing I ordered to munch on polished off when the bartender came back over. He was smiling again. "He said he wants to buy you another drink."
I glanced down the bar and the guy was looking at me. He looked sweet, but really wasn't my type. He had a very youthful feel to him. I liked them a little maturer.
I took a napkin out of the holder nearest me and wrote the kind man a note. 'Thanks for the drink, but I don't need another. You're very sweet for offering a second one. KW.'
I handed the napkin over to the bartender. "Can you give this to him with my apologies? I'm going to go."
I pulled out my wallet but the bartender was shaking his head. "He's paid for that too."
I pouted as I turned to the guy. He was just smiling and chuckling at my pout. I bowed my head in thank you and rose to leave. I walked away and saw the bartender give the guy my note. Before I knew it, the guy was out of his seat and rushing after me.
I stopped at the door for the guy to be nice. He stopped in front of me when we were just outside the door. He smiled that boyish smile and I noticed a dimple or two. He held out his hand and I slipped mine into his. Instead of shaking, he lifted it up to his lips like a gentleman. He gave my knuckles a tender kiss.
"Hi. I'm Vince." He raised an eyebrow. "So no number?"
I shyly shrugged. "Sorry. I never give my number out to random guys."
He chuckled as pulled his wallet out. "How about I give you my number and you maybe call me sometime?" He looked so innocent with that smile of his.
I took the card smiling sadly at him. "Just so you know, I rarely call guys."
He nodded. "I know. Most women are like that."
I smiled at him and turned away. I glanced back and he had sighed slightly watching me leave.
I got out and hailed a cab. In the cab I looked at the card. I smiled a little more seeing that there was more than just a number. He had his email address, or at least one email address on the card. I figured I'd be nice and send him an email instead of calling. He was nice and deserved something in return.
When I got home, my cats were unsure who I was till they got close. When I sat down on the couch, my girl cat was sniffing at my hair. She was checking it out and messing with it. She was always fascinated by hair and now she has my new do to play with.
I watched TV before falling asleep with my cats curled up around me. I had fallen asleep on the couch. The TV still on. My cats purring  away. My girl cat laying on my chest like always. My boy cat on my stomach.
My late husband and I saved them from a shelter. We were thinking about getting one cat, but these two call out to us. The moment we held them, they were licking our faces and purring like crazy. We had to get them.
I named the girl cat as she seemed to love on me more. She is this black beauty with a white streak from her right eye down to the shoulder blades. I thought she looked like a Star with that streak. Like the marking was a shooting star.
My late husband had named the boy cat. Because they were brother and sister, they were both nearly all black. But the brother's white was different. His white streak started at his left ear and wound like a snake down and around his left leg. My late husband actually thought it looked like a chinese dragon. Thus the boy cat's name is Dragon. I just call him little man.
I woke to the sound of my door bell ringing. I groggily got up pulling the throw around my shoulders. My cats grumbled but sat up looking at the door. I looked out my peep hole and a guy stood on the other side of the door. I smoothed out my hair because I knew it was wide from sleeping on the couch.
He smiled at me when I opened the door. He had a package in his hand. "This came in downstairs. I think it's for you if you're Katherine Wells."
I smiled at him. "I am. Thank you for bringing it up to me. You didn't have to."
He smiled more as he handed over the package. "I don't mind at all. Gave me a chance to me the infamous new tenant." He held out his hand. "I'm Richard Mallory. The building's association's leader."
I slipped my hand in his. "Hi. Sorry we've not formally met yet, I just finished getting settled." Yeah. Took me five months to get settled after I finally found this place.
He chuckled. "That's understandable." He leaned his shoulder on the door frame to my door. "There's a small get-together every Saturday evening in my condo. It's for anyone who wanted to come and meet others that live here."
I bit my lower lip nervously. "I've never been a social bunny."
He laughed lightly. "No pressure. Just come if you are up to it." He shrugged. "Most of us are single, but there are a few couples that come over too."
And of course Star would come to sit next to me and meowed up at me. She thought I was holding the door open too long. My cats never leave home. The may have been found outside with their mother, but they don't like going outside.
I giggled shyly. "Sorry. She hates it went I hold the door open."
He waved off my apology as he bent down to her. "That's alright. You're a smart girl aren't you?" He said the last sentence to Star as he reached out to her. She moved to stand behind me.
I smiled down at her and shook my head. "She's skittish around strangers."
He stood up. "It must have been something when you got her then."
I shook my head at him. "Nah. She bonded with me instantly."
He smiled at me. "You must be a very wonderful person to be around."
I shrugged feeling very shy. A slight blush raising to my cheeks. "I don't know about that."
Star meowed again, but louder. I sighed. "I should let you leave." I lifted the package a little. "Thank you again for bringing it up."
He smiled and bowed his head slightly to me. "Anytime." He turned away. "Have a good day Ms. Wells." He said over his shoulder.
I closed my door and giggled. He was so hitting on me. I was actually curious whether others go to his apartment on Saturday, or if he was just saying that to get me over there. I might go and take a friend along with me just to be safe.
I sighed. What friend? I was just now making some friends. Maggy. Jar, maybe.
"Hmm." I hummed to myself thinking of the guy that gave me his card yesterday. Going over to my computer, I pulled up my email. I first added his email and contact information before I started writing an quick email to him.
'Hi. You don't know me but we met at Status at Westwood Village. That new restaurant. Well, I did say I don't usually call guys, but I do email.
I bit my lip as I started a new paragraph. 'I normally don't just send out an email like this. I hope it's not too forward of me. Well... I guess I might hear back from you. I hope you have a good day.'
I sent sighed as I watched the message send out on it's way. I couldn't believe why I just did that. Oh well, I kind of hope he might be a friend. I'll just have to wait and see.
I got up and changed for the day. I smiled knowing I was going out with Jar and I found out that Maggy was coming with another girl I didn't know. I was told that I'd hit it off with her instantly. I was game to making new friends.
When I got out of the bedroom, I noticed I had an email. I blushed when it was from Vince. 'Hey. I was gladly surprised to see your email. I'm guessing you're the gorgeous white haired woman who took my breathe away. You have made my day.
'I love that you messaged me. I don't think it was too forward at all. You did warn me you wouldn't call. You can message me anytime. Please do.
'Well, I've got to go, but do keep in contact with me. Maybe I could take you to dinner sometime.'
I giggled softly to myself. Another guy flirting with me. Every guy seems to be interested in me. I was single now and so very available. I felt like I was finally over the death of my husband and ready to be out there. Maybe actually date different guys. Really be single for once.
My husband had been my first real boyfriend who took me out on dates. Seventeen and not been on a date before he showed up. I was the most pathetic girl ever, I know. It was hard for an awkward girl like me who had no real mom or father growing up. I was such an awkward anti-social girl though I was a very good friend to any one that I associated with, but they never did anything with me outside of school. I was just the nice girl everyone knew.
Now I was reinventing myself. I was going to try and be the way I've wished to be. Someone people actually socialized with. The woman who wasn't afraid to date maybe two guys at once. But first I'd have to start with one. I'll just give myself some more time and just take things as they come.
