Neil Harper POV:

Protect was a fancy word I carried like a badge. Glorified its meaning, making it a principle.

Reality never fails to make me realize I was a mere human tricked by a devil playing god.

The motel room shampoo had a distant fragrance to it; artificial, candy sweet.

When I got out of the bathroom, El was asleep.

I hope the wound doesn't get infected.

I tuck her in the blanket, turn off the nightstand light, and settle down on my bed.

Things are happening so fast. I don't know if we are steering in the right direction.

I turn to my side, watch El as she tosses and turns in her sleep.
The quiet model room and her shallow breathing, it was somehow peaceful. She looked at peace.

El has a way of always keeping me on edge. But at the end of the day, she is where I found comfort.

She has been as such since she was just a kid. Her words that she utters so nonchalantly left me astonished.

El always said, "Neil, we are the protagonist of this story. We have the plot armor. Nothing is ever going to break us apart."

Like a fool, I always believed what she said

Like a fool, I always believed what she said. We were 15.

Even in sadness, her amber eyes were filled with hope. I was so envious
Although our hands were tainted with the blood of so many, she still held humanity in those eyes.

Some nights I wonder if we can ever go back. Back to the days in Arlyne, that she yearns for.
But this world has never been fair so far.

I fail to keep my promises while I let her poison herself with the blood.

I shift on the bed, laying on my back, staring at the ceiling, the neon lights of the sign brighten the room.

The silence of winter night slowly numbs my thoughts.
We have to leave before sunrise...

Author's Note:

Here we are with Neil's POV finally. I chose not to go back to beginning to give his perspective. Since the story at a slow pace, it would get even slower, if I move back and forth.
