luke and ashton are both five
-
"hey ashton, meet luke! he's the same age as you!" ashton's mother introduces the two small children to each other.
"he five?!" ashton exclaims, holding up five fingers and smiling happily.
luke waddles over to where ashton is, but since luke is wearing cute little overalls and he's not used to them he basically trips on the his own feet and lands on his butt.
luke falls regularly being the clumsy blonde toddler he is, so he's used to being on the ground more times than none. still smiling, luke gets up from the ground and continues walking towards ashton. once they meet each other face to face, both are grinning widely with their mouths slightly open and staring at each other.
"yeah! i five!" luke says, holding up three fingers.
"cool. let's be friends!" ashton says, still staring at luke.
"friends!" luke grins happily.
the two play with each other for several hours that day with the supervision of both their mums. their mums are good friends from work and decided to let their boys meet each other. luke and ashton seemed really happy with each other and they were both anxious to learn things about the other.
they exchanged facts about themselves as best as two five years could. they spoke in short, choppy sentences and used basic words or things they picked up from other people that seemed to fit in their sentences.
by the end of the day, liz got tired and told luke that they had to leave. with that information, luke started crying and whimpering. he didn't want to leave his new best friend. ashton and him were such good friends now that they knew more about the other than themselves and that's very hard for kids like them that have horrible memories.
ashton, upon hearing luke bawling, walked over to where luke stood and hugged him closely. ashton's hands were tightly grasping the back of luke's shirt that was under his overalls. they remained in their embrace for so long luke had fallen asleep on ashton's shoulders and ashton was lightly snoring. they both lost their balance and softly landed to the ground with a quiet thud. neither of them woke.
liz and anne were overwhelmed with their sons' cuteness that they took pictures on their phones and decided to just talk a bit more before they'd leave. liz just couldn't stand separating the two. when they did eventually leave and luke woke up alone in his crib, tucked in and alone, a feeling of sadness enveloped him and luke felt extremely lonely.
where was his ashy?
why was he not hugging him like he was before?
how'd he get home?
so many questions flooded the young boy's mind and he didn't know what to do other than cry. crying is a basic emotion for a kid luke's age and it just helps them let their emotions out.
liz arrives in luke's room seeing the small toddler standing in his crib with his thumb in his mouth and tears surrounding his eyes. it may be dark in the room but anyone would be able to tell that his face was bright red.
"lukey, what's wrong my sweet boy?" liz asks quietly to luke.
"where's a-ashy?" luke hiccups, slightly whimpering as he spoke.
"awh baby. ashy's at his home where he lives and you're at home where you live." liz explains, trying to get luke to understand that they don't live together even though he wished they did.
"b-but why? why isn't he with me?"
"luke, you'll see ashton again soon. we'll visit him tomorrow, alright?" liz replies, trying to get her baby to smile again.
"we will?" luke questions happily.
"yes, my baby boy. of course." liz sweetly responds.
"i miss ashy. he was nice." luke mumbles, sticking his thumb back in his mouth again.
"and he misses you too. now get some sleep and you'll be able to see him even sooner." liz promises.
"alright mummy. i love you."
"i love you too, luke."
and as luke fell asleep that night, he imagined him and ashton together happily as they were earlier that day. carefree and with no worries, just the way it should be.
