Chapter Nineteen: You’re Just Making Up Words
°°°
There comes a moment a person finds themselves asking ‘how well do I even know this person? Am I even a good judge of character?’
I stare at Cherry with a raised brow, then I turn my stare to the girls. Audrey frowns, totally convinced of Cherry’s words, but Nat looks nonchalant as usual, I find it hard to tell if she’s even paying us any regards.
While Tony is somewhat of a jerk, he never really seemed like a bad person to me. Yes, for the longest time, I simply believed he was like Ben and Trixie, but the more I think about it, the more I realize he hasn’t really done anything to hurt me; other than breaking my glasses which he claims was an accident.
“I thought Allen was gay,” I muse aloud and Nat rolls her eyes at me.
“He’s omnisexual, girl! Tony’s the gay one,” Cherry calmly explains, but I only end up more confused. I scrunch my brows at her as I try to wrap my head around the unfamiliar word, but it doesn’t seem to make sense to me.
“Now you’re just making up words.”
Nat looks up from her phone again and at me, and she shakes her head while she tries to supress what seems to be a chuckle.
“Poor, naïve, ignorant Bells.” Nat clicks her tongue, then goes back to her phone. She stares at it for a moment, then she shoves it into her pocket.
I keep my gaze on Nat as I wait for her to offer an explanation, but when she doesn’t, I turn my gaze to Cherry who doesn’t seem to be paying us any attention anymore. She simply groans and walks towards the direction of the exit, not looking over her shoulders to check if we are coming after her.
I adjust the strap of my backpack as I double up to keep up with her fast pace. Nat and Audrey just keep walking, not the least fazed by Cherry’s unusual attitude. People smile at her as she walks past, but she ignores every single one of them, a huge scowl etched onto her usually friendly face.
“Cherry, could you just explain things to me? Please?” I plead when she slows down in front of her car. She opens the driver’s seat of her pink vehicle and gets inside, not bothering with a reply to my question.
I turn helplessly to the other girls and Nat shrugs as she gets into the passenger’s seat, while Audrey opens the back door and gestures for me to get in. Once I comply, she takes her place beside me and shuts the door after her, supressing a yawn.
“I’m super exhausted!” She exclaims, but I am not paying attention to her.
Curiosity builds within me, the thirsting to know more, and I can tell that whatever happened, it has to have been huge to have such an impact on Cherry. Despite the curiosity too, I feel concern. Cherry is the nicest person in the school, and knowing that someone has made her this hurt just irks me.
“Cherry! You can’t pretend you don’t hear me. Tell me what in the name of biscuit heaven happened between Allen, Tony and you!” I demand, a little more forcefully than I should, but it does the trick of getting her to talk.
“What do you want me to say?” She snaps. “Allen and I were happy, then Tony had to just waltz into the picture and start spreading lies about me, then Allen left me without as little as a proper breakup. Imagine walking into school and catching your boyfriend all cosy with some other dude.”
I sigh deeply as I don’t know what to say to make her feel any better. I catch her reflection through the rear mirror and I can tell from the sadness in her brown eyes that she really, really liked Allen.
