You sighed, thoroughly aggravated by his stubborn attitude, but was curious to what he was going to say.

"(Y/N) I FINALLY HAVE YOUR ATTENTION. DON'T CUT ME OFF, OKAY?"

Kaneki's eyes narrowed at Ayato's desperate words, which surprised you a bit.

"When you were kidnapped, I couldn't save you. And I'm sorry. It's just that if I tried, or even made a small attempt, Yamori would have killed me on the spot." Ayato explained in rough detail.

You were unsatisfied. However, you realised that you weren't unsatisfied with him, you were unsatisfied with yourself for being so sensitive. You should really get a grip of yourself sometimes. It wasn't Ayato's fault that you were angry. You just wanted to let off some steam, that's all. Maybe it was better to just apologise...

"No, Ayato. Actually I should be the one who's sorry... "

Ayato's eyes widened, giving you a full view of his dark blue orbs. He immediately took you into his arms and smirked, pleased with himself. You melted into his little hug of relief and giggled, like a young school girl.

You looked over at Kaneki, who was staring out the exit, obviously distressed. He walked away in a huff and disappeared into a fog of dust.

Ayato let go of you and smiled down at your small figure, which was quite rare of him to do, but you knew how Ayato had a soft spot for you. You stood on your tip-toes and pecked his cheek, before following Kaneki's scent to his whereabouts. Ayato said he needed to 'settle' some things with his sister, so he left too.

Your bare feet treaded upon broken glass and pieces of concrete rubble along the way, although it didn't hurt as much as you expected it to. Has the torture changed you? Has it proven to be an advantage?

You were soon met with a darkened sky and the sound of chaos not so far ahead. How perfect.

"Jeez, Kaneki where did you goooo?" You weakly strained out, unable to manage more than a small yell. You instantly regretted having used up all your strength screaming at Yamori...

You weren't really bothered to find him at a time like this. You were drained of your energy and tired. The only scents you could pick up were the CCG members scattered around the Aogiri hideout.

But something urged you to join the conflict. The conflict  that may have created a change. The conflict of humans and ghouls.

It was obvious you weren't the same girl you were a few days ago.

...

And the thought of joining Aogiri floated above the surface of confusion. Why? You wanted to be respected by others and be granted power. Now your only desire was to become stronger. There was no need to hesitate. This was a great chance to switch sides and see everything in Aogiri's perspective.

You continued to follow Kaneki's faint scent so you could tell him about your decision when you met up. Luckily for you, he wasn't so far away. He was walking alone, amongst the dead bodies of ghouls and humans alike.

"KANEKI!" You called out his name with the remaining strength you had.

When you finally caught up to him, you stopped for a moment to catch your breath. His eyes were emotionless and empty, which made you a bit nervous. You regained your posture and straightened up.

"Kaneki, I'm joining Aogiri. Tell everyone at Anteiku that I'll be leaving. I want you to thank them in my place for taking care of me."

Tears stung the tips of your eyelids, but you wiped them away. You refused to cry. The two of you were separated by a pressure like no other. This world runs on power, not emotions.

"Well Kaneki, I guess this is goodby-".

"(Y/n), I'm coming with you."

"You don't have to-"

"I've made up my mind, (Y/n). It's impossible to change it now."

You were unable to find the words to explain what you felt.  It just grew stronger by the second.

Was it mere happiness? Was it joy? Was it worry? No, it was something you wanted to feel a long time ago.

It was love.
