His own breathing was the only sound Fruit could hear, which was deafening in his ears as he stared at his feet, wet with slush and diluted blood. If he could go back to that day, the one in the Skeld when his fate had been chosen for him, he would have refused and willingly let his life be taken. It was too late now however, he had played the game and won.
14 days earlier.
“Yes, I understand sir.” Fruit nodded and gathered the packet of papers off the desk in front of him, standing to leave.
“One more thing-” Fruit paused as his boss began, “you cannot tell anyone about this… that is very crucial.” Her tone was grim and her gaze was unreadable.
“Uh… of course sir…” He agreed and turned to exit her office.
It was a mission. He had been recruited to join an expedition crew of nine workers to the Polus Outpost on the other side of the asteroid field where communication was close to impossible, or at least outdated. That outpost had not been used in years- a decade almost- and it had all but been abandoned by the previous crew. Polus was located on a purple rock planet with an atmosphere cold enough to produce nothing but a thick space snow- there was virtually no reason Fruit could think of that would require their presence on that desolate base.
He gazed at the papers in his hands and thought about what his boss had told him. It was top- secret, beyond classified to the point where he was about to leave on a drop ship with not even the slightest clue why. With a deep breath to sooth his nerves, Fruit slid his key card in the lock outside of his bunk, ready to take a nap or clear his head for a moment, but when the door opened, he saw he wasn’t alone.
“Mr. Fruit! How’d the meeting go? Get in trouble?” Areios greeted as he unzipped his jumpsuit and took off his shoes.
Areios and Fruit were bunk mates on the Skeld, in fact, they had been since day one of their arrival- five years ago. They had both come in on the same ship from neighboring towns on Earth, taken for labor on the ship’s deteriorating exterior. They were not among the lucky ones in that aspect- those were the crewmates that got sent to Mira HQ. Mira Hq was home to the wealthy, the prominent, and those who got sent there were mainly domestic servants or laborers that never had to venture outside of the tower for anything. They had everything they could have ever asked for and more.
Fruit also took off his boots and slid them under his bed. “No- it was just a physical check up.” He lied smoothly.
“Then what's all that?” Areios inquired, motioning to the papers he had received- most of which contained redacted information that was clearly more than just a physical.
“It’s nothing, just some menial paperwork I have to bring to admin tomorrow for the boss.” Fruit said, laying down and putting his hands behind his head and shutting his eyes.
There was a moment of silence before Areios spoke again, this time his tone coming across much more flatley. “Man, I thought you were going on that cool mission to Polus…”
Fruit’s heart jumped into his throat and he sat up, staring confused and daggered into Areios’s eyes. “I don’t-”
“Save it Fruit.” He said bluntly. “I know what those papers are… you’re going to get on that dropship on the north port and you’re going to leave for Polus tomorrow morning.” He seemed like he was being cold, but his eyes betrayed him. There was something like sadness, but also something else...something darker… something scary.
Fruit slid to the edge of the bed, never breaking eye contact with his friend. He could feel his hands were getting clammy and that his jaw was clenched. “How do you know all that?”
“Listen,” Areios sighed, “what if I told you that we have a chance to get out of this base permanently. We can escape.” He started to sound desperate and Fruit realized he was being serious.
“I don’t understand…” He did understand, but he prayed it wasn’t true.
“The Impostors-” Areios said in a hushed tone and Fruit’s heart sunk back down out of his throat all the way into his stomach and he felt as if he was going to be sick.
“No, Areios, you can’t, they’re dangerous!” Fruit hissed back, worry making his vision go a bit blurry. “You can’t…”
Areios sat beside him on the bed, and put a hand on his back as if to reassure him. “Join me.” He said softly, smiling a bit now. “We can be free! We can run away with their help!” Areios exclaimed as he stood up once more, full of vigor now. “Mr. Fruit this is our one shot, you have to trust me.”
That seemed impossible now. How could he trust an impostor? They were killers...terrorists. “How?” Fruit managed to mutter.
“Come with me tonight to meet the rest of the gang and they can tell you what to do, I promise.”
“Okay.”
