The moon glowed in the lake. Starlingfeather was sorting her herbs. Burdock root goes here... Comfrey here... Water mint... She purred as she noticed that she had plenty of catmint. Leaf-bare, I'm ready for you!
The sun dappled her gray pelt, making it look golden. Rainstar padded over to her. "Are we running low on anything? I can ask Lightningstrike to send a patrol out to find herbs." Starlingfeather shook her head. "We're fine on everything, even catmint. Besides, if I ever needed herbs, I could get them myself." She pressed her pelt to her littermate's.
Rainstar ran back over to Highledge. Starlingfeather glanced back at her herbs. "Back to boring old sorting herbs," she thought aloud.A scream was heard. It was from the nursery. Starlingfeather gasped. "Petalflower! Her kits must be coming!" Her question was immediately answered by Hawktalon racing into the nursery. "It's Petalflower! Her kits-"
Starlingfeather cut him off. "I know, I'll be there when I can. You do want to be there for your mate, don't know?" Hawktalon nodded and ran back into the nursery. Starlingfeather grabbed her borage leaves. The gray she-cat padded outside and grabbed a stick. She raced into the nursery and tossed the stick to Petalflower. "Bite on this when you feel pain."A long-furred gray she-cat slid out.
Next came a small creamy ginger she-cat.
After was a small yellow-orange tom.
Last was a blue tom.
"Two toms and two she-cats," Starlingfeather mewed proudly. Soon her happiness faded into sadness as she saw the blue tom's flank wasn't moving. He wasn't breathing. Petalflower noticed, too.
"I'm sorry..." Starlingfeather meowed. "At least he shall be in StarClan, free from the worry of the Clans." Petalflower nodded. "Rainkit. He will be Rainkit. Hawktalon, you name the yellow-orange tom."
"Sunkit," he smiled proudly. "The gray one will be Featherkit," Hawktalon added after he named Sunkit.
"And the creamy ginger one..." Petalflower paused for a moment, searching for the right name. "Rosekit. She shall be named Rosekit, in honor of my best friend, Roseflower."
"Rosekit," Hawktalon repeated. I like it."Starlingfeather padded out of the nursery, into Rainstar's den. "Petalflower has had her kits, two toms and two she-cats. One of the toms died, it was blue, they named it Rainkit. The other tom, a yellow-orange tom, they named Sunkit." Starlingfeather paused for a moment, and Rainstar nodded. "The she-cats, one was long-furred gray. They named it Featherkit. The other she-cat, a creamy ginger, they named Rosekit." Rainstar dismissed her and padded into the nursery. "Hello, little kits," he purred, touching his muzzle to Rainkit. "We shall bury Rainkit tonight," he mewed. Petalflower nodded, her eyes full of grief. "This is Sunkit," she mewed, dipping her head towards the small yellow-orange tom. "That's Featherkit." Petalflower flicked her tail towards the gray she-cat. "And this is Rosekit," she finished, licking Rosekit between the ears.
