Chapter One
1976:
I watched as he paced around the room "Mr. Evans this isn't right. The people should know about this."
He slammed his hands down on the desk "Susan she's already dead. What more can we do?" Tossing the papers he had in his hand into the fireplace he continued grabbing more.
"Give the family some closure. Let them know their little girl was found in the damn river."
This was breaking my heart. How could he not want to let this family know what happened. Mr. Evans face turned from worried to pissed.
"Telling the family will only cause the town to go crazy. It's my town and my choice. I chose to not tell them and keep her as a missing person. A run away. If I find out you told someone or went behind my back and told them. I can promise you. You won't like the result."
I nodded my head and watched him continue getting rid of the evidence. Knowing deep down that this was going to have some type of karma in the future I tucked away a single piece of evidence in my pocket while he was busy.
2018: Present day.
Walking into the house I started the search for my mother. "Mom!"
Freezing in my spot I waited for her to hollar back "I'm in the laundy room dear."
I quickly made my way to the laundry room "Mother a few of my friends are coming over for a sleep over tonight. I hope that's okay."
My mother turned and looked at me "Amber what did I say about making plans before asking me or your father first?"
Rocking back and forth on the balls of my feet I whispered "not too" but stopped when an excuse came into my head. "But in my defense I haven't been able to catch either one of you for the past week. So technically this isn't my fault that you don't know."
My mother face dropped and she sighed. "Okay that is fair. I am sorry. Who's all coming?"
"Misty, Colton and Drake."
My mother made a face at me "that's fine, but no funny business. Understand?" Not being able to hide my blush I just nodded my head. "Good now go order some pizza for dinner and make sure the living room is cleaned up for you guys to sleep in."
I said thanks before running away so she didn't have time to change her mind. Pulling out my phone I sent a text to the group message.
'Sleep over at my house is on for tonight. Bring snacks and drinks.'
5:15 pm.
Grabbing the pizza menu I started dialing the number. After about twenty five minutes of trying to place the order I finally got all the food ordered. DING.
'I'll be there in ten minutes. Did you order dinner yet?'
Misty 5:45 pm
'Same here. I'm brining drinks ;) Also Colton is with me. He's bringing some weird ass muffins his mom made.
Drake 5:48 pm
Deciding to not reply I tucked my phone away and started cleaning up the living room and gathering the blankets and pillows. About an hour or so later everyone was here and scattered around the living room.
I tossed a twizzler at Misty grabbing her attention. "Is your dad still demanding we go to the ball next weekend?"
Taking a bite of the twizzler and waving the piece at me. "Yes he is. This morning he practically yelled at me to remind you guys. He was acting awfully strange this morning though."
Colton snorted "What's new? Your dad is always acting weird."
Misty threw a pillow at Coltons head making him fall over. "That may be true, but this morning he was reading an old ass paper from 1976. When I asked him why he told me to mind my business and be a damn kid."
"My mom was doing the same thing today. Except when I asked she told me she was just remembering the past and told me to be safe at school." I got up from my seat and grabbed the paper from the table. "Here you can read it. I did earlier. It's just about some missing girl they never found. It's kind of sad actually."
My mother walked into the living room and crossed her arms. "Amber May. I told you to not touch my stuff. Especially my old papers."
Everyone in the room got very quiet. "I'm sorry mom. I was just super curious as to what was on the paper that was so interesting."
Misty decided to chime in when neither one of us said anything. "My dad was reading the same paper this morning and snapped at me when I asked. I was just curious as to what put him in the bad mood. Amber didn't mean anything Mrs, Susan."
Her face softened and she ran a hand through her dark blonde hair. "It's just something that happened a very long time ago." She grabbed the paper and folded it up "Your dad took it very hard with his job. Give him some time. It'll pass. Also we are going out tonight. Don't do anything stupid."
Everyone laughed when she pointed her finger at Drake and waved it at him. Once she left Colton started making fun of him. "Drake I don't think she trusts you very much. What ever could you have done."
Drake looked over at me and winked making me turn bright red. I hate when he does that. It embarasses me so much.
Misty giggled "I know exactly what he did."
I swatted her hands and shoved her over. The night was dragging on and when my parents finally left the house it was around nine thirty. I've always wondered why they would go out every other night this late and stay out until midnight. Currently all four of us were in the kitchen snacking on the leftover pizza when the door bell rang.
"Who the hell would be here at this time?" Drake glared a little bit at me making me roll my eyes.
"Don't look at me. I don't have late night visitors unlike someone.." I glanced over at Misty who had a smile on her face.
Drake and Colton both sighed and went to the door. "Well who's there?" I shouted but they came back with a vase filled with dark red roses. "Who left those?"
"I don't know nobody was there when we grabbed them, but there is a note it says 'I hope you enjoy these roses just as much as she did.' Who are these from?" Colton looked puzzled as he read the note.
Misty snatched the note from his hands and laughed "it's probably just some stalker of mine."
Colton snorted and bent over laughing " girl you ain't that special. Calm your tits. They look expensive. Probably for your mother." He then sat them in the center of the island and placed the note in front of the vase. "Shall we go watch the movie now. And by watch I mean fall asleep too."
We all laughed and headed to the make shift bedroom. Once everyone was comfortable it was minutes before everyone was out like a light.
"Who brought these flowers?" My mother shouted making everyone jump awake.
Crawling from my spot in the floor "stay here." I whispered earning a couple grumbles. I took my mothers hand and pulled her into the kitchen. "Mother, they were left on the front porch around ten. We thought they were for you. Sorry."
She took the vase and tossed them into the fireplace in the living room. "Next time don't take things from strangers."
Before I had time to explain she stormed upstairs with a confused dad follwing behind her. Shaking my head I decided to go lay back down next to Drake.
