Bottle of tequila in hand, I walked out the door sober as nun.
"Anvi!" Someone suddenly yanked me back into the house. "Where the hell do you think you're running off to?"
I looked up at the girl in front me and put my hand on her shoulder. "Nina. My friend. I would do anything for you, but staying for uncle Morgan's 50th is not one of those things. See you tomorrow. Goodbye." I turned around and opened the door to make my escape. One more foot over the threshold and I would be free. But alas, life is never ready to let you do what you want.
"Ma! Anvi's leaving!"
My eye's widened and I spun around to glare at Nina. This bitch. She smiled at me all innocent-like. But oh was the devil on her shoulder cackling at my expense. "You are the worst best friend the world has ever known. How dare you sic your mum on me!" I said with gritted teeth.
Before Nina could say anything, the hurried footsteps of her mum echoed down the hallway as she made her way to the door. She put her hands on her hips and looked at me with something that resembled disappointment. I sighed and looked down at my shoes like a kid who got caught doing something she knows she wasn't supposed to do.
"Aunt Minnie... I was just about to come say bye." I said, scratching the back of my neck, still not looking at her.
"Mmhmm, with a big ole bottle of alcohol in your 22-year-old hands. I don't buy it. Now you get your little butt back inside. We're cutting cake." She left no room for discussion. Nina snickered as she walked behind me toward the backyard.
"How does she always manage to make it sound like I'm underage?"
Nina glanced at me and laughed. "Hey. At least she didn't take the bottle away." We reached the door to the back yard and I stopped and looked at the bottle. I groaned. "Man. I had plans for this bottle."
Nina looked at me. "We both know you were only going to get three shots in and then pass out like some sad cat lady waking up in her bed the next day smelling like the cats took a piss on her."
I looked at her like she just grew feet out of her ears. "What even, Nina?" I laughed. She smiled and squinted her eyes at me, "It's you."
Before I could give her a piece of my mind, aunt Min casually walked past us. It took me a second to realise she had grabbed the bottle from my hands. "But Aunt Min, I won that fair and square!" She turned to smile at me, " You can come get it from me later. Besides, Rowan said you cheated." She then sauntered off with my alcohol in hand. I looked at Nina incredulously. "Who the fuck is Rowan?"
