I half stumble down to the Great Hall that weekend, my mind bleary with sleep. If not for Bekah pushing me out of bed I'd probably have stood Fred up. In fact, the night before I'd put myself into a panic because he hadn't specified that this would be a date. I had no idea, really, if it was a date or if he'd just wanted my company.
Bekah had whacked the back of my head and told me to stop being an idiot. Of course it's a date, otherwise, George would have been there as well. Which is a good point. Fred hadn't mentioned anything about George so I assumed he would not be present. Which, as I walk into the Entrance Hall, I realize to be true. George is nowhere to be seen and it's just Fred standing there with a dark brown coat on. He grins as I approach.
"Morning, Persie. How'd you sleep?"
"Like the dead," I say solemnly. He gives me a weird look and I chuckle. "Dark humour this early in the morning isn't a good idea, I take it." Fred snorts and we join the line of students signing out to go to Hogsmeade.
"I don't mind the dark humour, it's a part of you and-" For the first time I notice a blush on his cheeks. "-and I quite like it." I smile back, a slight blush coating my own cheeks.
"Thanks," I reply, because I've no idea what else to say. We shuffle forward in the line. "Where's George today?" I ask. He shrugs.
"He's probably annoying Ron or Ginny."
"I didn't think you two could be separated," I joke. Fred grins at me.
"Oh, trust me, he practically wrote the note himself." He looks away towards the front of the line as we walk forwards again, the line of students in front of us growing shorter. "How's your hand?" He asks.
"Fine. My friend, Bekah, has been giving me this salve - Star Glass, I think - and it's doing a pretty good job. But the words..." I bite my lip.
"Sorry, I shouldn't have brought it up," He says sheepishly. I nudge his shoulder, smiling.
"No. Thank you for asking, I appreciate the concern."
We walk forwards some more and soon we're discussing possible pranks to pull on Madam Pince. It's an easy conversation to fall into and I feel pretty comfortable standing next to the tall red-head. He's easy to laugh with and can make me smile with just a look. I think I might actually like him, but it's just... it doesn't feel like what most girls describe. I don't feel butterflies. Just this sense of... comfort. Maybe it turns to butterflies?
We walk down the leaf ridden path towards the small village on the edges of Hogwarts territory. I haven't been there before and this would be my first time. Every sight is a wonder to me - the stone walls of the paths, the way the sunlight dapples the pathway. It's all so beautiful in the way that dying things are often beautiful.
"This is your first time to Hogsmeade, isn't it?" Fred asks as the little village comes into view. It's small and welcoming with the autumn vibe. I smile slightly.
