Under the Mistletoe

I snuggle under my fuzzy blanket and sip my hot chocolate. The steam from the hot chocolate warms my face, causing my cheeks to burn up.

The warmth from the fireplace continues to engulf the room with heat as the blizzard persists outside. The blanket is soft against my skin. I shuffle around under the blanket until I am comfortable.

I flip through channels on the TV until I settle on ‘Miracle on 34th Street’. This has been my favorite Christmas movie ever since I was a little girl. The movie brings a smile to my face as Chris Cringle speaks Dutch to the little Dutch girl in Macy’s.

The blizzard continues outside furiously. It shows no sign stopping. I can hear the wind tearing through the atmosphere and the snowflakes falling fast to the ground. I glance out of the window only to see darkness with dots of white falling to the ground.

The living room is being lite by the television, fireplace, and the bright Christmas tree. The rest of the house is pitch-black.

My phone begins to ring playing, ‘All I Want for Christmas is you’ By Mariah Carey. I press answer and hold the phone against my ear

“Hi Mom.”

“Hi sweetie. Are you watching Miracle on 34th Street? I can hear it playing in the background”

“Yea” I say smiling, even though she can’t see me.

“I’m going to have to tell Nana to turn it on.”

“How is Nana’s?”

“Oh, Paige, the whole family is having so much fun! They are all asking where you are. Nana and Pop-pop miss you.”

“Mom, you know I don’t like to the go to family gatherings. I hate being the oldest child. Every time I go to one, I end up playing on my phone until we leave.”

“But sweetie, it’s Christmas Eve! Can’t you make an exception? Just drive down! The roads aren’t that bad! Everybody wants to see you Paige.”

I really don’t feel like driving in this weather, but my mom is making me feel bad. I cave in and tell her that I’ll go.

With that she replies ecstatically “Thank you Paige! Everybody can’t wait to see you!”

“Alright, see you soon. Love you.”

“Love you too sweetie.”

I let out a sigh and end the call.

I lift the blanket off of my body and place my hot chocolate onto the coffee table.

I trudge up to my room and throw on a pair of jeans and a sweater. I put on a little bit of mascara onto my eyelashes.

I walk back downstairs and open the hallway closet to put on a hat, gloves, boots, and a jacket. I make my way into the living room so I can finish my hot chocolate and turn the TV off. I put the fire out but leave the tree on.

Bundling up inside of my jacket, I head to the front door.I open the front door  I’m startled by the figure standing in front of me. The person’s hand was extended in the form of a fist.

I quickly reacted; slamming the door shut and locking it.

The person outside begins to bang on the door and scream “Please let me in!”

My heart starts to beat rapidly as I scream back, “No! Go away!” I slowly back away from the door, waiting for an answer.

“Please! My car broke down outside of your house and my phone is dead! It’s freezing out here! Please let me in!”
