I felt old,too old.
While most of my friends were already living their lives, I had just graduated from college about six months ago with a degree of bachelor of pharmacy at twenty five after 5 years. Five freaking years!
"If I ever have kids, none of them is gonna do sciences," I promised myself for the a hundred thousandth time.
Being the bright student I was, I had got a pretty high C.G.P.A so I didn't have a hard time finding a job since most of the companies I applied to had given me a positive response, so I did what I'm sure every other person would do.
I chose the highest paying one.
To my mum's dismay, I decided to leave home 2 weeks ago after I received an email informing me that I had passed my interview and got a job at FAGIL, one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in my country.
I still remembered how 'smooth' our argument went.
"No Allen! You aren't going anywhere," she had said in that tone that I once found scary.
"I have to," I replied.
"No you don't have to. You can always stay here with me."
I groaned."I have to learn how to live on my own mum."
"You can learn that while staying here," she replied and I almost laughed. Was she being serious?
"Mum, I'm twenty five!"
"I'm twenty five years older than you."
"Mum.." I whined.
"What?"
"I need to learn how to take care of myself, pay my own bills, buy my own groceries and all that other stuff adults do."
"What do you mean by 'other stuff adults do'? " she asked with narrowed eyes and I laughed fully knowing what she thought I meant.
"You really wanna know?" I winked and she looked away mumbling a "God save our souls".
"Anyway, you can stay here and pay me. I'll be a good landlady for as long as you are a good tenant."
"Mum!"
"What?"
"That's not gonna work!"
"Why not? We can strike a good deal. Right now if you want!"
"Mum!"
"One hundred fifty thousand shillings a month?"
"No."
"Okay, okay! Maybe it's a little too much. How about one hundred thousand shillings only?"
"No."
"What? How much do you want to pay?"
"Nothing mum, I know you'll just end up depositing what I pay you in my bank account."
"What's wrong with that?" She asked admitting and I sighed.
"The whole point of moving out is to learn to do things on my own, mum."
She sighed. "I can't change your mind, can I?" She asked and I shook my head no. "Okay..I'm going to miss you,"she replied clearly giving up.
"No you're not."
"I am!"
"Nah, you're just gonna miss someone washing the dishes and cooking for you whenever you don't feel like it,"I laughed making her laugh too as I moved to hug her.
"Maybe you're right."
"You don't have to be so honest mum,"I laughed hugging her.
She almost squeezed my life out of me when she hugged me back. "Can I carry you?"
