Liz plated their dinner at seven thirty, it was a simple dish of carrots, peas and and seasoned chicken strips. At exactly seven forty two there was a knock on the door, Liz answered it with a smile while the two kids were stuck deep in their assignment and dinner.
“Hi, I’m Officer Irah, I’m here concerning a Luke Hemmings,” The Officer spoke holding paper work.
“Yeah, he’s my son, what’s going on?” Liz asked as she began to panic.
“There has been an incident, regarding an Ashton Irwin.”
“Listen, can we talk outside for a moment.”
While Liz and the Officer spoke outside, Luke and Grace were adoring their chicken, Luke was shoving carrot sticks in his mouth pretending to be a walrus, making Grace laugh, the one Luke has begun to enjoy.
“Luke,” Liz’s voice rung through the house, “there’s a man hear to see you.”
Liz guided the officer into the kitchen where the kids were. His eyes widened at both the kids, Luke dropped the carrot sticks from his mouth onto the plate to concentrate his attention to the officer, he noticed how he had big eyes and very dark skin.
“I’m Officer Irah, Luke I need to talk to you about Ashton and what had happened earlier today as the school nurse notified me that you guided Ashton to the office and the physical education system said he was fine when you took him,” Officer Irah explained, “Would I be able to talk to you alone?”
“Come one Grace,” Liz said to Grace.
“Are you Grace Abernathy?” Irah asked to which Grace nodded, “I went to your home and Mrs Kenston, said you weren’t home, can you talk with me after?”
“Sure, no problem,” Grace’s voice ringed with fear.
Officer Irah sat with Luke at the kitchen table across from him while Liz and Grace went into another room. Luke felt intimidated by the policeman in front of him.
“Evening Luke, I’m sorry to disturb you from your homework and dinner,” Officer Irah said looking at the plates in front of him, “but I’m just going to tell you some stuff and then ask you some questions, nothing hard.”
“Okay,” Luke mumbled.
“On the fourteenth of January twenty fifteen, Ashton Irwin was admitted to the hospital at exactly eleven twenty three, he had noticeable head injuries, very hot sticky skin, his eyes looked rather big and he couldn’t speak or properly move,” Irah’s eyes moved his eyes down the paper that he held in his hand, “After a full diagnosis and many medicine, Ashton began to speak, not properly just a bunch of mumbo jumbo, he kept saying ‘Grace will run, she’ll run with Luke’ and then I was called down to see what happened along with your physical education teacher Mr Gabe, Mr Gabe said that you too were the last people he was seen with.”
“We were, but what has his Injuries got to do with Grace and I?” Luke asked.
“Mr Gabe said he had head injuries and was slightly unstable then he comes to the hospital Luke someone has drugged the life out of him, I want you to describe everything from PE to watching Ashton leave.”
“So I was, watching the game of basketball that the class was having after I came in late-”
“Why did you come in late?”
“I was helping out Mrs Jenkins in the library, anyway, the game was getting rough and there was lots of pushing and shoving, I made a comment about it to Grace, who was sitting near me, then when I looked back Ashton had been hit in the face by the basketball and the fell backwards whacking his head on the ground so, Mr Gabe ordered us to take him to the nurse, and as we walked he seemed fine, then he started getting very sweaty and shaky all of a sudden and fell out of our grip hitting his head on the floor again, I then carried him to the nurses office and told Grace to the nurse, I sat with him and waited for the ambulance to come,” Luke’s voice began to weaken at the end, the poor memory of what happened today made him want to cry a river and then some.
“So you are telling me, you didn’t put this into him,” Officer Irah slammed down a small tub (like the one you would use for takeaway sauces), onto the counter, inside was a very small looking syringe.
“What?” Luke gasped, “You actually think I’d drug my best friend, are you insane!”
“Thank you for your time Luke, sadly for you, we will have to be in contact still, and if this goes to court, I hope you are prepared to give the judge the truth, I don’t think there’s room for someone like you in a juvenile detention centre,” With that Officer Irah sent Luke off to get Grace.
Grace came into the kitchen biting her nails, which were sore from how far down they have become. She weakly smiled at Irah.
“Now, I’m just going to read the exact same passage to you as I did to Luke then I will get you to just answer questions, it’s very simple,” Officer Irah smiled, he noticed how pretty Grace was, now it wasn’t exactly creepy as Grace was sixteen and Irah was twenty three, “On the fourteenth of January twenty fifteen, Ashton Irwin was admitted to the hospital at exactly eleven twenty three, he had noticeable head injuries, very hot sticky skin, his eyes looked rather big and he couldn’t speak or properly move.”
“Oh,” Grace whispered.
“After a full diagnosis and lots of medication, Ashton began to speak, not properly just the same sentence continuously, he kept saying ‘Grace will run, she’ll run with Luke’ and then I was called down to see what happened along with your physical education teacher Mr Gabe, Mr Gabe said that you too were the last people he was seen with.”
“Ashton said something along those lines to me when he was on the sick bed, telling me that Luke and I will be introuble and we’d need to run.”
“Now, I’m assuming that was caused by the chemical put into him,” Irah said as he put the same tub down he showed Luke, “now tell me Grace have you ever seen this?”
Grace observed the syringe, and shook her head.
“It was found in Ashton’s back, now I’d like you to just explain your pe lesson.”
“Well I handed Mr Gabe my sick note as I recently got my arm out of its cast and I have to be careful with it then I just sat watching the class basketball game, then Luke made a comment about all the fighting how it looks like we were in the wild then Ashton was hit so we took him to the nurse, each of us on either side then he began sweating and getting hot, Luke then carried him, then I was cleaning a kids wound after I told the nurse to call someone then Luke called me in, then Ashton spoke to me and then moments later the ambulance came,” Grace began to cry after.
Officer Irah frowned at her and handed her tissues, “I just hope what you said is true, because I don’t want this going to court and seeing a pretty girl like you going to a juvenile detention centre.”
Once Officer Irah left the kitchen, Luke came in and noticed Grace in tears, he felt a pain in his heart as he watched a girl he barely knew cry.
“Can I use your bathroom please?” Grace choked out, Luke nodded.
“Down the hall, second door on your right,” Luke told her, Grace thanked luke and locked herself into the tiled room.
