"I'm sick you see, and I'm not able to participate today," Grace had told the PE teacher as she handed him a pink doctors note, which happened to be real. The PE teacher, Mr Gabe, shook his head and let out a light laugh. He sent Grace to sit on the side and watch while he rounded up the rest of the class. Mr Gabe was one of those PE teachers you see funny internet pictures of when they are too big to actually do physical exercise and then it makes you wonder how they got the job. Grace loved Mr Gabe, but not in a creepy way, in a good relationship with a teacher and student way. He never told her off and picked on her to do most errands, basically because she was the only trustworthy one, even though she faked sick a lot.
"Ah Mr Hemmings, late as usual," Now Mr Gabe wasn't wrong, Luke was late a lot, but for once he had a valid reason.
"My apologies Mr Gabe, but the librarian needed my help," Mr Gabe nodded and sent Luke to watch for being late and because Luke knew about Mr Gabe's affair with the librarian and made a deal with Mr Gabe to get A's on assignments and reports and to not have to do PE. Mr Gabe completely agreed and gave Luke quite a bit of money so he would definitely stay quiet.
"Abernathy," Luke nodded as he passed Grace. He only just found who she was earlier as they were both partnered to do a maths assignment together, then Luke came up with a clever idea (well clever to Grace) that she was to go to his house after school for the assignment, and to get help from his mum.
"Luke," Grace nodded, feeling uncertain whether to call him Hemmings or not.
Luke watched as the class began playing basketball, he was cheering and clapping only for his friends, everyone else didn't exactly matter to him. Grace on the other hand just watched Luke watching the game, she noticed everything, how he tugged on his hair when the other team had the ball, or how he leaned forward pulling his lip ring when they had the ball and close his eyes tight when they'd try to shoot the ball.
Grace loved Luke and has wanted to do nothing but tell him but she wouldn't risk getting laughed at, then have Luke write a Facebook status about her so everyone would know who she was.
"Abernathy, Hemmings carry Irwin to the nurse," Mr Gabe instructed.
Grace and Luke got up from their seats to go help aid Luke's best friend, Ashton had fallen and whacked his head on the ground after being hitting the face with the ball.
"Ashton, mate, how are you feeling?" Luke asked as he moved Ashton's sweaty locks off his face, Ashton nodded.
Ashton was being supported by Luke on the left and Grace on the right. Ashton was sweaty and shaking in the arms of his carriers. Something was up, Luke was slightly more concerned than Grace, being his best friend and all.
"Ashton, we're almost there buddy," Luke said, in hopes to calm Ashton down.
Ashton slipped from their arms and began to move on the ground rapidly, Luke began freaking out and picked his muscly friend up from the ground and made his way to the nurses office quickly, with Grace right behind them.
"Tell the nurse, I need to put him on a bed," Luke instructed as he went into the sick room.
"Nurse Wills Ashton is having some sort of seizure, he needs to be aided straight away," Grace practically yelled at the woman who was cleaning up a cut leg.
Grace sat down with the boy, Calum, a friend of Luke's too.
"What's happening with Ashton?" He asked as Grace wiped his bleeding leg.
"He hit his head quiet a bit, the started shaking," Grace explained.
Luke was holding Ashton's head up as the nurse told him too and she rung the ambulance.
"Grace," Ashton barely got out, "Grace."
"Abernathy?" Luke asked his ill friend.
"Grace, get Grace."
"Grace!" Luke yelled, "Ashton wants you."
Luke was getting upset, he felt sick watching his friend suffer. Grace and Calum both hurried into the sick room, where Ashton kept mumbling 'Grace'.
"Yes Ashton?" Grace asked nearing his head, leaning her ear towards his mouth as Calum suggested.
"Run," He whispered, "You and Luke will Run, you'll be in trouble, but you will run."
"What does that mean?" she asked.
"You'll run to safety, you'll run," He told her, "run."
Grace stood confused as the doctors came rushing in grabbing Ashton's cold squirmy body. Luke was crying into Calum's shoulder as he watched Ashton go.
-
It was lunch time when Luke was notified about Ashton, he was in the hospital doing fine, but they still needed to do tests and scans. Luke was happy for the rest of the school day, while Grace was still confused.
"Please don't talk about anything other than the maths assignment with my mum," Luke kindly instructed Grace as they walked to his car, which by the way isn't a car, it's an Alfa Romeo.
"Alright," Grace shrugged.
"What did Ashton say to you earlier?" Luke asked breaking silence.
"I don't recall," Grace whispered like someone was listening in.
"You do recall, because ever since he spoke to you, you've been quiet and white as ghost," Luke whispered harshly back.
"I am rather white anyway," Grace whispered earning a look from Luke, "Fine, okay he told me to run, that we would be in trouble and we'll need to run, there you happy?"
"Run?" Luke asked. Grace nodded.
-
Luke's house was big, Grace thought it was a billion times bigger than her own home. Luke quickly introduced Grace to his mum, not wanting a long boring conversation to happen.
"We will be doing maths, feel free to help," Luke told his mum, "we'll be in the kitchen."
Both Luke and Grace grabbed their text books, maths books and assignment books from their bag and began.
"What number should we make E?" Grace asked Luke.
"Perhaps, forty two?" He asked
"Sure, forty two it is."
"Alright pardon me I need to Piss," Luke said as his mum came in the kitchen.
"That boy," Liz laughed shaking her head, "Grace, are you hungry, thirsty because knowing my boy he hasn't offered you anything."
"I'll be alright Mrs Hemmings," Grace said, unsure if she's eligible to call her Liz.
"Sweetie, call me Liz, Mrs Hemmings makes me sound old," Liz smiled, Grace smiled back showing her braces, "now, would you like to stay for dinner?"
"Sure,"
Luke came back into the kitchen fumbling with the zipper on his jeans to try and get it up, it was obviously stuck which was funny to Liz and Grace, even Luke cracked up a little.
