Jobs

A few weeks had passed after James and Sirius had taught Harry quidditch and the weather was beginning to cool and leaves began fluttering about to fall from trees. Lily and James were sat on the sofa one evening, Lily curled into James who had his arm wrapped around her. The flickering light from the muted soap opera on their, newly acquired muggle television set, illuminating their faces.
"You know we should probably think about applying for jobs or at the very least have a discussion about jobs" Lily said breaking the comfortable silence.
"We probably should" he replied "you wanted to go into the relations between muggles and wizards preferable the government section right?" he questioned
"Yes I did" she responded raising an eye brow. "You remembered."
James ran a hand through his hair grinning. "I always remember what you say love."
"Yeah?" Lily snorted. "Apart from when I say you should: spend less time on your hair, take the bins out, hoover..."
"The hoover was just the once," James protested. "And I was doing something really very important so you mustn't count that against your hard working husband."
"Important," Lily smirked, fingers tapping out a beat on her leg. "You were styling your hair."
"I was teaching Harry about responsibility."
"You were teaching Harry about responsibility by doing your hair instead of the household chores," sighing Lily rolled her eyes affectionately.
"I was teaching him what not to do..." James said slowly, upon seeing Lily's expression he jumped to his feet. "Do you want wine? I'll get you some wine and chocolate!" he squeaked hurrying toward the wall cabinet where the alcohol could be stored out of reach of certain curious toddlers.
"This isn't the end of this conversation," Lily informed James neutrally "and if you insist on giving me wine select a good bottle."
"I know dear," James mumbled, running through the motions of selecting a bottle and glass, before carefully pouring the wine, and finally retrieving a top secret box of chocolates. Lily watching him, a feeling of bliss sweeping through her, bringing a dizzy smile to her face.

"Please forgive me love of my life, jewel of my crown," James crossing the room passed Lily her glass with a bow and flourish.
"Don't push it," Lily said accepting the glass.
James plopped back in to his previous position, selecting a mint chocolate from the box. Again they fell in to a comfortable silence, the kind which only can be found between people sharing the upmost familiarity and love. Sipping sour wine and eating sweet chocolate, his childhood sweetheart and best friend by his side James aloud himself a moment to feel thankful.

Thankful that he'd met Lily and his brothers.
Thankful that Lily had chosen him, even after his years of adolescent idiocy.
Thankful that they'd brought their beautiful rambunctious, funny, Harry in to the world.
Thankful that the war was over.
More than anything thankful that they'd survived and had things to be thankful for.

He reveled in the almost cliché contentment of the moment.
"We were talking about work," Lily quietly said after a while.
"Oh yeah," James bounced forward in his seat. "There is a position open in the ministers office. I think that the closest your going to get to the job you want in the current state of things..."
"How... how do you know this?"
"I saw some applications when I went into the games and sports department the other day, I...I went to see... to see if any of the teams that offered me a place at the end of school might want to be recruiting any time soon" he said hurriedly
"And..." she pressed sitting up slightly a feeling of excitement bubbling up inside of her.

"well...well they all have contract for the next two years all except... except well how would you feel if I told you the position for Puddlemere United's new center chaser would be mine if I told the manager I accepted the position?" he asked nervously
"Seriously"
"Well... yes"
"You have to accept"
"You're sure?" he questioned "I didn't want to stop you having a career in something you have wanted to do and frankly we don't really need the money..." he was starting to ramble on.
"James" she interrupted "we both know that neither of us are suited to sitting at home. Ever since I have known you the two jobs you have wanted to do are pro quidditch or an auror, if I'm honest I much prefer the idea of you being a quidditch star. I can apply for a part time position and work my way to full time, however if you don't take this opportunity another one might not come around. We can figure out who can look after Harry and plus if you don't do this your son will not be pleased especially as his new found obsession is quidditch."
He laughed softly "I guess"
"So it's a deal then. You accept your quidditch offer and I will apply for a job in the ministry" she kissed him softly and then settled back against him, his arm wrapped tighter around her and he pressed his cheek against the top of her head.

"Now on to the topic of you and house chores"
James groaned "but I am now a very important quidditch player," he said moving his hand through his hair again "surely I should get to not do chores?"
"Don't groan it sets a bad example, and no you are not exempt, do I need to buy you a chart and some gold stickers as well?"
