Ivys POV
I pushed hard against the large wooden door of our new home, the unoiled hinges whined loudly as it creaked open. The sun shining through the windows reveled the copious amount of dust particles floating through the musty air of the old house. "Look at all that potential, I think we really lucked out" Mom said enthusiastically, hauling yet another box through the front door. "Ya mom, totally lucked out" Aspen replied mockingly, a large box labeled 'BEDROOM STUFF' in her arms as she stumbled through the front door.
"Oh don't be like that, it's a small town there was only so many options" mom scolded, rolling her eyes at my twin sister. "Well I think it's nice" I retorted, throwing my arms over my mothers shoulder to hug her. I gave her a squeeze and a smile before taking off down the hallway. The house my mother had picked was old and big, but that's how she liked them. It had come fully furnished with pieces my grandmother would have died to get her hands on. I'm guessing circa 1972 or so.
Dad was already at the office, he was always at the office, but I don't think mom minded much. When he was home he was never the nicest to her. Her never hit her of course, but sometimes words can hurt more then that.
We moved to Derry Maine for my fathers job, he got promoted to CEO of the office in Maine. He made good money with his work, enough to buy my mother everything she could have wanted along with anything his daughters did as well. Though that didn't do much to impress Aspen.
Since we turned 12 she was cold and hostile towards our dad. She became quite interested in women's equality that year and made it a point to scold fathers misogynistic behavior at every chance she got.
"Ivy come upstairs" Aspen yelled over the banister. I could hear her footsteps as she sprinted around on the second floor. The old wooden boards moaned beneath her feet above my head. Hauling myself off of the green velvet couch I jogged up the stairs, looking in doorways as I searched for my sister. "I'm in here" she called from the room at the end of the hall, her voice echoing down the long hallway.
As I made my way through the wooden door frame I looked around the room. It was mostly empty other then a large bookshelf and a couple of decorative chairs. "Isn't this cool? Mom said we can use it for whatever we want." Aspen said, shuffling through some of the books that had been left on the shelf. "Wow that was nice of her" I answered, dusting off the bright orange chair before plopping down on it. A cloud of dust puffed from the cushion making me cough.
Aspen turned around, pointing a book at me. "She's just trying to bribe us, she feels bad that we had to move for dads job" she scoffed, taking a seat in the chair beside mine. "Shit" she hissed waving the dust out of her face. "It's not her fault" i mumbled, pulling at a loose string on my shorts.
Maybe mom felt bad for us but honestly I felt worse for her. "I know," Aspen sighed, she got up and squeezed into my chair with me. She leaned her head against mine, wrapping her arms around my neck. "I'm sorry Ivy, I'll try to be nicer, I promise" she said, sticking her pinking out for me to take. I laughed, we hadn't pinkie swore on anything in a very long time. I lifted my hand and locked my pinkie with hers. "Cross my heart and hope to die"
