Ch. 2
The next few weeks after that, I can almost smell the torture. The room next to me came down with meningitis, another with a heart attack, then bronchitis, then meningitis, and then she checked out okay. Everyone around me was sick, and I almost lost it. I mean, it was bad!
I checked out of the hospital about 8 days after I woke up. I got Alexsi and she checked out okay as well, and I realized how much I missed my bed. I crawl into it and lay down with Alexsi. We both take a nap, and we don't wake up till dinner.
When dinner swings around, Haili comes over and says she finally got a boyfriend. I'm telling her that it won't be a problem, until she gets hurt, then I can kick his ass. She laughs and tells me if I do, she'll kick MY ass. I'm setting the table, when I hear Alexsi crying. I run upstairs and pick her up. She calms down almost instantly, and I carry her down for dinner. I put her in the high chair that Haili pre-ordered for me.
"Hail," I say. "I have some great news for you."
She stares at me. "Well, out with it, then."
Toby comes to stand by me and he puts his arm around me. "After an easy decision," says Toby. "We have decided to ask if you would like to be the godmother of Alexsi, so in case anything happens to us, we can trust you to be there for her."
Haili is strung speechless. Her jaw hangs completely open, and she starts to cry. We all go in for a family hug. She accepts, but soon after that, the doorbell rings. I pop Alexsi up on my hip, and answer the door. Standing there with yellow roses, was the one teenager I could never trust: Michael.
