Charlotte
I sighed frustratingly as my narrowing eyes scale the tall wall. They travel up and up and up, to the top, where the clothes rack hung. And on it, the perfect dress. Knee-length, long-sleeved, collared and a deep burgundy colour with a soft velvet touch to it. I had had my eyes on the dress for a while, and now that I had finally gotten to it, it seemed that life didn't want me reaching it.
Literally.
Standing quietly at only five foot two, I peered around for those helper guys. But no one was around, just shoppers. Hesitantly I decided, I was going to attempt to reach for it. My hand slowly stretched up for the dress, but I was perhaps a million light years away from the actual hanger.
And these damn heels aren't helping either...!
I pulled my hand down, huffing. Okay, there was no way I could reach it. Once more, I searched for staff to help me, and once more, it was to no avail. I didn't want to give up on the dress...

I glanced over the sea of denim jeans for the billionth time. They all looked the same, and yet, it was so hard to choose. Finally picking up a pair, I headed over to the till.
But not before I saw her.
A small chuckle escaped my lips as I watched the poor girl struggle. She sighed and grunted, even on her tip-toes, she could barely reach halfway up the clothes rack. Slowly, I strode towards her.
By the time I reached, she appeared to have given up. Nevertheless, being the gentleman I was, I effortlessly pulled the soft, red dress out for her. She didn't seem to notice me until she looked up and our eyes locked. I was falling into a mesmerising, deep, blue ocean, full of wonder. I also realised she was not a little girl, just little.
But I couldn't take my eyes off of her.

I stared up at the dress in defeat. Suddenly it started floating. My eyes widened and I took a step back. It was moving away and lower. I followed it with my eyes and I realised someone had picked it out.
A man looked down at me, holding the dress. He had a slight smirk on his face, dimples faint in his cheeks. But then my eyes met his, and I was suddenly lost in that chocolaty haze. I couldn't pull my eyes away from him.
I felt myself go red, but for which reason I didn't know. The fact that I was super short and standing next to a damn ladder? That fact he held the dress I wanted and had helped me? Or that I was staring at him?
With all my willpower, I looked away from his handsome face and at the dress. I cleared my throat, tucking a loose strand of golden highlights behind my ear.
"Here you go,"
He said in low voice, with a small smile, giving me the dress. I smiled back, taking it gently.
"Thank you, um..."
I trailed off.
"matt ,"
He smiled.
"Right, matt . Thanks."
I awkwardly nodded. He laughed lightly. The kind sound rung through my ears and I could feel myself blush again. God, was I going to get out of this mess...?

She smiled as I gave her the dress, a tingly joy inside me. I didn't even know her and yet I wanted to keep talking to her. Hell, I didn't even know her name. Well, that would soon change.
"Sure, it's fine, um..."
"Charlotte ,"
Her soft voice spoke again.
"lottie ?"
I joked, chuckling. Much to my relief, she laughed too.
"Charlotte ,"
She corrected me.
"Charlotte ! Right, you're welcome,"
I responded
. "Right, I'll see you around then,"
She smiled and walked away. Once more, I found myself unable to take my eyes off of her retreating form. Snapping myself back to reality, I turned on my heels. Totally not creepy staring at a girl.
I walked along the racks, trying to pick out a nice shirt, but I couldn't concentrate. My mind kept wandering back to Charlotte like north pulls to south. Charlotte ...Those glossy blue eyes flashed in my head... I wondered, would I get lost in those blue eyes again...?
I sighed, giving up on a shirt. I had plenty anyway. I paced over to the short queue, not wanting to get stuck in a longer one later one.
And I saw that beauty once again.

I got the dress. I was overflowing with joy. So much so, I couldn't stop myself from smiling. But half of that smile was really for that handsome matt . Deep brown eyes, a dark, neatly trimmed beard, a perfect smile.
Stop fawning over a random man you don't even know, Charlotte ... I mentally scolded myself as I walked over to the checkout.
And that random man I didn't know was there again.
We walked up to the queue at the same time. I stepped back, gesturing for Dave to go first, but he only did the same for me. We laughed and he let me in first.
"Thanks,"
I uttered quietly.
"Of course,"
He smiled. I forced myself to look away. Just then, cashier numbers four and five were free, so we both walked up.
I placed the dress on the counter and the young woman at the till scanned the barcode. I fished out my wallet from my handbag as the price popped up on the small screen. £22.99.
I searched my wallet for the notes and coins. A tenner, another tenner... And a total of forty-two pence...
I don't have enough... No no no no no...!

I paid the girl at the till. Unable to help myself, I stole a glance at Jess beside me. I mentally laughed. She was struggling again.
"You alright there, uh, Charlotte ?"
I smirked at her. She peeked up quickly and back down to her bag.
"Yes, I'm fine. It's nothing,"
She quickly muttered. Yeah, right.
"Let me help you, what is it?"
I said, stepping up beside her with my own shopping.
"No, it's fine. You've done plenty for me already, matt ,"
She said in another quick mumble. I glance up at the woman at the till, her face growing ever-bored. I urge Charlotte
.
"Hey, let me help. Okay? What is it?"
It came out slightly pressing, but I didn't want Charlotte to suffer the impatience of the cashier. I knew how some of them could be. She sighed and looked up at me, my eyes meeting those vast oceans once more.
"I'm fifty-seven pence short,"
She whispered. I could tell - she dreaded it. She had clearly wanted the dress. But now that she couldn't get it, her cute smile was gone. And I would bring it back.
I reached into my pocket, pulled out my wallet and paid a pound to the lady. I could see Jess' mouth and eyes widen in shock in the corner of my eye. The cashier took it without a word and bagged the dress.
"Keep the change."
I said as I picked up the bag.
"Let's go, Charlotte ,"
I said casually, walking away. She paced up behind me, and we walk out the shop together.
"Oh my god, matt , you did not have to-"
I cut her off by handing her the dress.
"You can pay me back later,'
I smiled. Her brows shot up in surprise and her pink lips curl into an incredulous smile.
"Wow, okay, then... I thought you were Mister Gentleman."
I laughed as Charlotte shook her head. I explain in a quiet voice in her ear.
"That way I get to see you again,"
The smile returns to her face.
