Chapter 1- Expect the Unexpected
Regular Show, it's anything but. Those are my five favorite words that had ever been written, along with, "Yeah yuh," "hmm, hmm," and a long sustained, "Oh." To my friends, they were simply the hilarious slogans of Regular Show, a cartoon television show about two best friends who worked at crappy jobs and were always charged responsible for any foolishness that went on at their park. To me, those words were what represented my father, J.G. Quintel. He is the creator of Regular Show, and the voice of the six foot tall blue jay, Mordecai. Technically, Mordecai is a scrub jay. Scrub jays are my favorite birds.
As long as I know regular show, I know my dad. Thinking about it from that perspective, I've only known him for a year or two. I've never really met him, but I've seen pictures and videos on the internet. I know his voice by heart.
My mother, Elizabeth Conwin, told me I had a father when I was very young, but doesn't talk about him much. She doesn't allow me to watch Regular Show because she thinks it is unhealthy, and will drive me insane constantly hearing the voice of a relative I will never meet. I watch it anyways, but only when she's at work. I'm able to find the episodes online on my iPad, and watch everyday. Sometimes I just listen to the show at night before I go to sleep. I like hearing his voice. It feel like I actually have my father there talking to me. My life is fine the way it is, but someday I would like to meet him.
None of my friends know that he's my father, not that I have many friends. I told them all that my parents they got divorced and I see my dad once a year. In true fact, my parents were never married. J.G. doesn't even know he's a parent of a 14 year old girl. He got my mother pregnant when he was 16, and she was 18. She broke up with him before she told him the news, because apparently he was a lazy druggy, and Mom didn't want me to be around people of that nature. Eventually, my mom moved away for college. She struggled to cope with school and her pregnancy, but made it possible. My grandparent's helped as much as they could, knowing getting mad at her would do no good. When I was born, my mother took a semester break from college. She named me Jenna Margaret Conwin. I'm not sure if that has any significance to Margaret from Regular Show. Maybe my parents were planning on naming their first born Margaret, and J.G. chose that name to play Mordecai's crush. I don't know, but I'm pretty certain he doesn't know he has a first born.
My mom home started home schooling me when my grandparents decided to move to the U.K. for somet new adventures five years ago. She got lonely and wanted to spend more time with me when they left. Her job is the evening shift as a graphic editor for films, so she spends the mornings and afternoons with me. It might be unsual, but I am already technically in college, even though I just turned 14. I skipped two grades and took the High School Exit Exam with homeschooling. Now I am finishing my remaining year or two of high school while taking college classes on the side. My major is animation.
Sometimes while Mom's at work, she let's my best friend Crystal come over to keep me company. I actually met Crystal through my home school on a field trip one day. She was the only other student my age that had the same major as me. After that we exchanged chat names and phone numbers and started talking every day about every thing.
Tonight, I am alone. I watch the whole first season of Regular Show, and chat Crystal for a while, and then say goodnight when I get tired. Tomorrow is Saturday, and I get to hang out with Crystal at the mall. I close my eyes and drift off to sleep.
I wake tiredly, but urge my self to get up and get ready to go to the mall. Crystal is picking me up at 10:00. I go downstairs and eat some Honey Nut Cheeros, then proceed to prepare for the day. By 9:47, I am all ready to go. Mom is still in the shower, so I use this time to watch one more episode of my dad's show. I chose the episode "Don" because baby Mordecai and Rigby are so cute. The episode finishes and I wait for Crystal. She arrives at my house a few minutes late, and I say goodbye to my mom.
