When his elder brother-Elijah-suggested the detachment from the perky human Klaus had been quick to shut it down, dismissing the entire idea as another scheme from his family to take away every inch of happiness the original hybrid had acquired.
But when Klaus got wind that the mystic falls scooby gang had gotten Mikael on their side his view on the suggestion changed drastically, the overwhelming urge to protect the frail human far more consequential than his own meaningless feelings towards her.
So despite the painful pit in the center of his stomach Klaus turned off the phone and let its perpetual dings fade into the distance as the plan to cease whatever fruitless attempts the vampires of mystic falls masterminded clouded his mind, the small slip of humanity he had managed to obtain fading like a worn-out photograph dusted with a grainy filter and lacking all pigmentation.
Those factors may have been why Niklaus Mikaelson was so utterly bewildered when the very girl who seized his fixation for weeks on end stood at a meager five three with a hot pink suitcase decorated in butterfly stickers in their living room.
Her hair was curled in small coils that danced across her back in waves of inky black. A thin tanned veil of skin covered her pulsing veins like a delicate piece of lace, so insubstantial Klaus could hear the quick thumping of Mallory's heart and the rush of crimson that raced up her plump cheeks.
Throat tightening in a constricting manner Klaus cleared away the lump that had built its way up and let out an inelegant cough.
He didn't know why he was nervous about this encounter, or why the anger he should've felt at Rebekah for going behind his back seemed to vanish with every sheepish glance the brunette threw at him from the fabricated barrier of her thick eyelashes.
Any fragment of irritation diminishing faster than Niklaus would like it too, that rage the only familiar emotion swarming his head and buzzing whining his stomach.
"What is this Rebekah?" Elijah's eyes flickered swiftly from the human girl-something Klaus couldn't believe as his own eyes hadn't found the will to tear themselves away from her-to a playful Kol before finally landing on Rebekah's nervous features with a hard glare, "Kol what is the meaning of this?"
"Um hey..." Mallory let out a haggard cough before straightening the back and positioning the index finger and thumb into a gun and giving a dramatic wink that Klaus assumed was supposed to be comical-though the only person that chuckled was Kol.
