Take Me Home

"Evelyn? Evelyyn?!" Ethan calls through the empty apartment to no response.

"I'm in here!" A voice calls from the master bedroom.

Opening the door, he finds Evelyn stuffing a suitcase, clothes scattered around her.

"Babe, why are you only packing now? We have to leave in a hour."

"I packed before, but I was just checking to see if I had everything I needed."

Ethan crossed the room to stand beside her. Looking into her suitcase, he finds that she's packed seven underwear, along with several different pair of shoes.

"I highly doubt you're going to need seven pair of underwear for a three-day trip sweetheart."

"I like to be prepared! You never know what can happen." She starts checking off her fingers, "I can somehow fall into the water and get it wet, it can rip, I can-"

He places a finger to her lips, laughing good-naturedly. "Also, if you're having trouble closing that monster, it's probably all those shoes."

"I like to have options." Evelyn insists.

"Okay, well please finish so we can start packing the car. We have to leave before the traffic gets too heavy." Ethan says, kissing her sweetly before heading out of the room.

"Love you!" Evelyn calls after him.

"I love you too."

A little while and a lot of tidying up later, the family of three is in Ethan's car, ready to make the five-hour drive to New York to visit Evelyn's grandparents for the Fourth of July weekend.

"I'm so happy! I haven't seen my grandparents in a while, and this is the first time we've gotten to bring Jenner on a trip with us." Evelyn states excitedly, petting a happily panting Jenner in the backseat.

Ethan smiles warmly at her. "Didn't you mention to me that you used to live with your grandparents?"

"Yeah, I lived with them while I was attending university. It made the experience better. Not having to live in a dorm, no constant instant ramen, all you're typical broke college student things."

"Did they mind having you stay for so long?"

"No, I didn't see them in person super often as a kid, so they were happy to have the company with it being just the two of them and the dog."

"They have a dog?"

"Yeah, I told you. They have a corgi named Lucy."

"And they're okay with us bringing Jenner?"

Evelyn rolls her eyes. "Yes, Ethan. I specifically asked to make sure it would be okay."

"Alright, as long as you're sure."

A few moments of silence pass. "Something doesn't feel right." Evelyn sighs.

"What's wrong?" Ethan asks worriedly. "Did you forget something?"

"No, I didn't. Do you know what the problem is?" Ethan arched an eyebrow in question. "We have no music! We can't have a road trip without music!" She pulls out her phone to play her playlist.

"Oh no." Ethan sighs, faking disdain although he knows that he loves it when she sings.

"Oh yes! Just a small-town girl! Livin' in a lonely world! She drove in Ethan's car goin' anywhere!" They both start laughing, knowing that Evelyn loves to change the words in her favourite songs. "Sing with me, Ethan!"
