 Different types of soul

“Are you sure?”

The question was posed at Celeste, and she turned to look at me, eyebrows high and amusement in her eyes. I knew she wouldn’t take that kind of question from anyone other than me, so I felt the need to ask for all of us.

“Yes.” She answered curtly, and I nodded shrugging – it wasn’t my place to judge.

We were stationed across the road from some little rest-stop café/restaurant in the middle of the high way. We had been driving for over two hours, following Celeste’s instincts as to where her soul-mate would be found.

Celeste stared at a young girl in a purple shirt with the café logo imprinted over the left breast, and a knee length black skirt. She smiled and seemed to be flirting with all the customers – in return getting a larger than normal tip.

“I wonder.” Celeste muttered and I chose to ignore the fact that she was starting to chant.

I had discovered a lot of harder spells required words instead of the wave of the hand or thought. For the past few days Celeste had been concentrating hard, and her power was waning because of it, meaning even a simple spell like the one she was performing required her to speak.

We had been sitting in the car for half an hour – we were the only ones left. The others had all gotten out as soon as they saw the rest-stop. It was easy enough to spot them in the crowd, because even without meaning too they stuck close together. Celeste had been saying she was going to get out, go over and introduce herself for the last twenty minutes, though we both knew she wouldn’t do that.

As soon as the thought crossed my mind Belladonna appeared on the hood of the car, staring at Celeste for a moment before jumping off of the car. The cat walked through traffic, and my heart rate jumped erratically – but it seemed even when a car came seriously close to hitting her, she just appeared on the other-side, none-the wiser.

“Jesus” Celeste cursed, opening the car door and hesitantly following her cat across the traffic.

I watched from the car as Belladonna made her way up to the waitress – who I assumed was Celeste’s soul-mate by the way the cat weaved its way between her legs. The waitress smiled, bending down to scoop up the cat in her arms, laughing as Belladonna planted a kiss on her cheek.

The two of them turned as Celeste finally made her way across the road, blushing furiously. After a brief conversation the woman turned Belladonna over to Celeste, who was shaking her head at the cat. But instead of walking away like I expected the waitress too, she smiled at Celeste, her hand lingering on her arm a moment longer than what I knew was normal protocol.

I straightened in my seat as they both came over, and I cleared my throat nervously, unsure of how to act around my best friends soul-mate.

“Ella, this is Dolly.” Celeste introduced calmly, though I could see the excitement and pure joy in her expression.

“Hi” I said meekly, before repeating the word a little louder, trying to make myself comfortable.

“Is she in?” I turned the question towards Celeste, who opened her mouth before closing it, turning towards Dolly, who stepped closer, taking a deep breath before looking me in the eye.

“I finish in twenty minutes; I’ll be ready to leave then.”

I stared at her agape and she seemed to relish in the fact she had surprised me. She planted a quick kiss on Celeste’s cheek before sauntering back over to the café, easily slipping back into her waitressing role.
