Some time ago, in a realm far away, lived a young and all-powerful deity who ruled the earth and all who inhabited it. He was the mightiest deity on Mount Olympus, instilling fear into all who laid sight on him.
And who was this mighty ruler you ask?
Well, this mighty deity went by the name Zeus: the god of thunder.
All mortals on earth knew better than to incite his anger. Each of them would whisper amongst themselves, praying for any creature who would dare cross the powerful ruler, saying "Bless the fellow who would dare cross Zeus."
For his rage was more lethal than his power.
But little did the mortals know that the man they prayed for would come in the manifestation of a woman; a beautiful mermaid who went by the name of Iraia.
Now Iressa was the most beautiful mermaid that lived in Poseidon's rocky seas. In a time long ago, even before Zeus, humans, and mermaids used to live in peace and harmony but this unity quickly diminished once Zeus laid eyes on her.
One sunny afternoon, as Zeus came down from Olympus to visit his brother Poseidon, he saw a woman bathing in the crystal clear waters near Poseidon's grove. The eager diety had never laid eyes on a woman like her before. She had long black curls that formed into effortless ringlets against her sunkissed shoulders with skin as deep as the embers of a fire. He was instantly encaptured by her visage and cursed fate for not allowing him to see her sooner.
"And who might you be?" Zeus's voice interrupted the young woman's peaceful bath. She snapped her head around and frowned but her eyes twinkled with interest once she saw his pleasing features. She lifted a slender finger from the waters and curled the end of her hair, purposely paying him no mind.
"Ah, a woman of chase?" Zeus spoke again. The woman giggled and turned to face the sea, diving beneath the waters to make her fin show. Zeus was taken back by the sight of her spine but of course, he saw her resilience as nothing more than a challenge to be won.
Some time passed and of course, Zeus charmed her in Poseidon's grove and the two of them fell madly in love, devoting their lives to each other. But what Iressa did not know was of Zeus' philandering ways. He was the famed deity who slept with anything with a beating pulse. Once Iressa heard the news of his engagement to a powerful goddess named Hera, she grew cold and her heart fermented with rage.
——
A months later when Zeus grew bored of Hera, he came down to the waters of the earth to see Iressa but what Zeus did not know that during his stay at Olympus, Iressa had ensnared Posideon with her contagious charm. Zeus grew jealous of Poseidon and angry at Iraia as she fell in love with his brother instead of him. Instantly, Zeus flew into a fit of jealous rage, taking out his bolt of thunder and striking every mermaid in Posideion's sea, cursing Iraia and all the mermaids to the darkened abyss of the oceans.
"How could you!" the jealous god raged as she crimped into a weak ball on the sand of the ocean floor. She lifted her head to him and chuckled, showing off her charming smile. "What explanation do you wish to hear? The one where I beg for your forgiveness? You will still curse me and for that, I regret nothing for you have broken my heart" she bragged, looking up at the might god, unremorseful of her actions.
She did not look for his sympathy or even pity, for Iraia cared no more. With one swift arm, Zeus picked up his bolt of thunder and struck her core.

Centuries passed and Zeus continued to reign on Mt. Olympus, somedays thinking of the beauty he once loved. The mermaids Zeus struck kept their beauty but remained curse; their only pleasure was luring sailors towards rocky shores with their hypnotic singing, causing them to crash into the rocky coasts and making them meet their watery demise.
The mortals called them Sirens, each of them destined to never fall in love again.
There were three kinds of Sirens: the celestial, the generative, and the purificatory. The first was under the government of Zeus, the second under that of Poseidon, and the third of Hades.
Although there were many mermaids that Zeus did not curse that day for they escaped his violent rath, they lived in fear of the sirens, for if a Siren found out you were pure, they would kill you and because of this, only a few mermaids remained.
Generations passed and the sirens reproduced and grew, outnumbering the mermaids who roamed the ocean.
So that is why he did it. That is the reason Triton took Ara away from her.
From them.He refused to let her see her mother again.
And Triton took his little Ara far, far, away, swimming against the current of the violent seas, promising himself to protect Ara forever.
Don't look back.
You are free.
Never look back.
For she was the last mermaid named Ara.
