Damon's POV

I can't believe I'm actually doing this. A substitute teacher at a high school... This is kind of entertaining... Once I get over the urge to eat everyone in the room...

I looked up as Elena approached me. Oh, this was fun. My Brother Stefan had called me a week ago telling me about Elena. I could see why he was so interested in her. She was a dead-ringer for Kathrine. I was equally interested; the only difference was that my brother wanted to use Elena to recreate Kathrine. I wanted to kill her.

"Can I have my iPad back?" Elena asked. Her politeness poorly masked her impatience with me.

"May I have my iPad back." I corrected her, annoying her further. Elena raised her eyebrows, waiting for me to give it back, but I wasn't quite done yet. I noticed her flawless neck, the purple veins just beneath the skin. I hadn't fed since the previous night and it was just too tempting. I glanced out the classroom window and saw the crowds of students rushing to lunch so I looked her in the eyes, using my mind-control powers. (One of the many perks of being what I was.)

"Come with me." I saw her startled expression melt into a calm one and I turned and walked into the back room, Elena following right behind me. Once inside, with the door closed, I made eye contact again and said, "Don't scream."

My teeth sank into the soft flesh of her throat and her warm, delicious, blood filled my mouth as I sucked through the two puncture marks I had made. Elena moaned in pain, numbed by the confusion of my compulsion. I felt her getting weaker in my arms and I forced myself to pull away. I could've killed her right then, but something deep inside stopped me. I bit my own wrist and held it out to her.

"Drink." I ordered. She took my wrist and brought it to her mouth, a dazed look from my compulsion in her eyes. As she drank my blood, the bite marks on her neck began to heal, and when I pulled my wrist away from her, they were only small pink spots, barely noticeable to human eyes. I led her back into the classroom and gave her iPad back, but before I let her leave, I compelled her one more time.

"Forget this happened. You came to get your iPad back, I gave it to you, and you left." Elena nodded, dazed, picked up her school bag and left, without another word.

The previous night, I had been having some fun outside Elena's window messing with her dreams, but I had to leave because I couldn't stand looking at her. I had done such a good job at blocking the memory of Kathrine from my mind, but when I saw Elena, all the painful memories came back. 145 years ago, Stefan and I had both fallen in love with the same girl. Her name was Kathrine and she was a vampire. She loved both me and my brother and told us that she could make us just like her-a vampire-and we could all live happily ever after. However, I didn't want to share Kathrine with Stefan, and Stefan didn't want to share her with me, so we made her choose between us. I shouldn't have made her choose, because she chose Stefan, and I killed her in rage. My brother and I hadn't spoken since then, until Stefan called me about Elena. Why he called me I have no idea. Maybe he was so surprised he just needed to tell someone who would understand. But he made the wrong choice. I wasn't going to let my brother have the life we both wanted, so I made up my mind. The next opportunity I had, I would kill Elena.

Authors note:
I know I changed the story of what happened with Damon, Stefan, and Katherine, but it was necessary for the story to make sense. I tried to keep it as close to the show as possible.
