You waited anxiously at the window, hands entwined, bouncing on your heels. It was finally coming; you spent days in anticipation over a cologne sample. Now, it wasn't just any cologne sample. It was the cologne Robert Downey Jr. has been said to wear. It would be having his presence near at every whiff. The mailman finally pulls in next to your driveway, and you quickly run out the door, greeting him. He hands you a couple of envelopes and a box before smiling and pulling up to the next house. You looked down at the box which read your name and the company: Gendarme. You couldn't contain your happiness as you ran back into the house, eager to open the box.
You carefully cut open the tape that held the box closed. Opening the package's flaps to reveal a box wrapped in plastic and some packing peanuts to protect the bottle from shattering. You eagerly dug out the bottle from the box, and there it was, finally, in the grasp of your hand. A clear rectangular shaped glass bottle with a matte silver top. It read "Gendarme V " in a jade green serif text.
Your heart started to beat fast in anticipation as you took the top off, before spritzing the cologne onto your inner wrist. You fanned the wet spot with your other hand, drying it out, then lifting your wrist to take a deep breath.
You let out a soft sigh as the fragrance filled your nose. It smelled fresh, like the smell of a man after a nice cold shower. There were hints of citrus, lemon, or bergamot. Another whiff and you detect some herb undertones, light notes of sage or thyme. It was light and fresh but still had that signature masculine smell found in most colognes. It was sophisticated yet gentle, and it was amazing.
You held the bottle close, taking another sniff once every last scent left your nose. You laid in bed, breathing in the fragrance as if Robert was there with you. You slowly closed your eyes, taking a deep breath of the aroma, letting it embrace you fully.
You opened your eyes, and suddenly you're in some kind of room. You looked down at your hand, finding that the bottle disappeared. You were suddenly standing in the middle of a hotel room, your mind a little fuzzy and disoriented, confused as to what was happening. Where you dreaming? Did you fall asleep sniffing the bottle?
Your thoughts are interrupted by kisses on your shoulder and being pricked by a course patch of hair. Hands now made their way onto your waist, squeezing it gently. You take a deep breath, and the scent of the cologne fills your nose again. Could it be? You turned around in the mysterious man's grasp and saw him—Robert Downey Jr. in the flesh. Your jaw drops, and your breath hitches as the man who stood in front of you was the man you couldn't stop thinking about.
"I'm guessing you like the suit?" He chuckles in that signature tenor tone. He turned around, walking over to the mirror, reaching up to adjust his tie. "Never thought a purple suit would suit me, but this is looking very nice. Jeanne did a good job, don't you think?" He glanced over to you through the mirror, an eyebrow raised waiting for you to answer.
You nodded. "It looks amazing, Robert." you say, clearing your throat as it now appears to have dried up. He smirked and turned back to you and took your hands in his squeezing it gently.
"Honey, you look incredible. I can't wait to show off my beautiful bride to everyone tonight." He reached up, cupping your cheek in his hand.
You looked up at him, reaching up to take off his purple-tinted sunglasses so you could have a better look at his eyes. You always thought he had normal brown eyes, but from up close, he had partial heterochromia. They were hazel with flecks of chocolate brown in each eye, which was more noticeable in his left, and it made his gaze even more mesmerizing.
"Should I go without the glasses? Your call." You thought for a bit before handing them back to him.
"Wear it, you're not Robert Downey Jr. without them." you giggled softly. He raised his eyes brow and put them back on.
"You know me so well, Y/N." He grinned. He took your left hand in his and brought it up to kiss your knuckles. "Let's go show this off to everyone." He smirked. You looked down at your hand, and to your surprise, you were wearing a beautiful diamond ring. You were engaged.
You look back up, and a bright flash disorientates you. You squint, trying to focus on whats in front of you, but the flashes of light continue. You hear people yelling, grabbing your attention. Your vision clears, and you're suddenly standing on the red carpet with Robert as voices shout in every direction, trying to capture the perfect photo. Robert squeezes your hand, calming you from your sudden nervousness. He lifts your hand up towards the paparazzi, showing off the engagement ring on your finger as he intended to.
"Mr. and Mrs. Downey! To your left! Let's see a kiss!" One person shouts. You turn to Robert, and he looks at you with those mesmerizing eyes that make time slow for a bit. He grabs your cheek, pulling you into a kiss. Oh, how his lips fit so well against yours, like two pieces of a puzzle. You could feel his lips twitch up in a smile. You inhaled deeply, breathing in his scent once more—his cologne, along with his subtle musk.
The camera whirs and flashes almost in slow motion as if it was some montage.
"Y/N" You hear them call. A strong influx of his cologne whiffs by your nose, and you open your eyes.
"Robert?" You call out softly, blinking. You sat up from your bed, and your head spun. You looked around, and you were back in your small twin bed.
You lifted your left hand, looking for your engagement ring, but it was nowhere in sight. You reached up and touched your lips. His kiss, his lips; it felt real. You sighed softly, tears welling up in your eyes.
You lay back down, clutching his cologne to your chest, taking in the scent, hopeful it would transport you back to Robert once again.
I hope you guys enjoy this one-shot!
