Amy's POV

"Mum, can I borrow your car to go to the shops with Riley?" I plead as I grab the bottle of orange juice from the kitchen fridge and pour myself a glass.

Without question, my mother reaches over to the key rack on the wall, takes her set of keys and slides them over the counter to me.

"Bring it back with a full tank," Mum instructs, before taking a sip of her coffee.

Everyone says I look like my mum. We both have wavy dark chocolate coloured hair, though mine hangs down the length of my back, while mum has her own just above her shoulders. Our eyes the colour of honey.

"Thank you," I say gratefully, placing my now empty glass in the sink and move to wrap my arms around her neck in a hug.

"Don't forget your Aunt Cara is coming tomorrow," Mum calls after me as I snatch the keys up from the counter and collect my bag in the hallway on my way out to Mum's car parked on the driveway. Climbing into the front seat and starting the car, I quickly hook my phone up to the Bluetooth and call my best friend, Riley.

"I'm in the car, I'll be at your place in five," I report as soon as she answers the phone.

By the time I pull the car up out the front of her house, Riley is bounding down the front steps, her champagne blonde hair glistening in the sunlight. Her green eyes smile at me as she jumps into the passenger seat and reaches over the centre console to embrace me in a hug.

"I'm so excited about tonight," Riley beams as we start the trip to our town's largest shopping centre. "Vicky has the best parties. Now all we need are the best new outfits to wear."

"Are you sure Steve said he was coming tonight?" I ask casually as I concentrate on the road ahead.

Steve and I have been flirting back and forth for the past four months during Math class.

"Dane said Steve is coming," Riley teases, knowing how much I was hoping we might finally take the next step at the party tonight.

Dane is Riley's boyfriend and Steve's best friend. They have been together since the start of the school year after hooking up at Vicky's last party over the summer holidays. As they began to spend more and more time together, it just happened that Steve and I became friends of sorts. It was better than being a third wheel while my best friend made out with her boyfriend. Steve gave me someone to talk to while our friends were busy.

Riley and I stroll the shops with linked arms, trying to decide which store to start with when Riley's phone starts to ring. She pulls it out to answer it.

"It's Dane," she gushes as she sees the caller ID and proceeds to answer the call, "Hey sweetie."

Riley stands to the side of the walkway next to a display window for Build-A-Bear. I shake my head, knowing she will be occupied for a while. I sigh and start to wander slowly on my own, looking in the random shop windows.

While I take in the contents of a candle store display, something draws my attention away. I can't really explain the feeling, but it is as though I can feel someone watching me. My eyes scan the shops around me, catching a pair of crystal blue eyes staring right back at me. The eyes complement the tanned features and dark blonde hair of the boy they belong too, who could only be a year or two older than myself. Heat rises in my cheeks when I realise I'm staring back at him, so I look away quickly. My heart begins to pound while I try to slow my breathing to a normal pace. When I steal a glance back in the stranger's direction he has gone. My eyes dart around in search for him, but he's disappeared without a trace.

A hand touches me lightly on my elbow and I let out a small squeak as I jump away. Riley eyes me. I take a deep breath and straighten myself.

"You scared me," I inform her.
