You walked out to the courtyard at the center of the school, where you saw Cedric and a few other Hufflepuffs goofing around on a bench. You decided you had to tell him how you felt, even if he didn't feel the same. You couldn't just not tell him. You could feel your heart in your throat, and your brain was bursting with hundreds of different possible scenarios involving many things.
Him being disgusted, him being disappointed, him turning you down and ending your friendship, and a few brighter ones that you tried to focus on. Maybe he would take you into his arms and kiss you, which was unlikely, but you still wouldn't mind if the universe had that in store. The prince of Hufflepuff noticed you and started to smile that perfect grin you loved so much. He glanced at his friends, who were saying something that clearly flustered the boy. He punched Markus in the arm over it and said something you couldn't hear. By the time you were at the bench he was a blushing mess, "(Y/n)! What can I do for you?"
"Can I talk to you for a moment?" You held your breath in anticipation. His friends gave taunting Oooo's before shoving Cedric up and out of his seat. He nodded swiftly.
"Hey, Ced! Save some for me alright?" Markus cooed. Cedric turned to him and smacked him in the chest roughly with the leather book he had in his hand, causing poor Markus to wince.Cedric gave him a challenging look before turning his attention to you. "Of course. Let's go somewhere more private," he said as he set his book down on the bench. You nodded in agreement and let him lead you to a more private corner in the yard. He gave you a worried look, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," you said, but he wasn't convinced. He placed a hand on your arm and looked deeply into your eyes from an angle, "(y/n), what is it." You bit your lip, pushing back all the negative scenarios in your head.
"I don't think you'll like what I've got to say. I'm worried."
Cedric's face fell, and you panicked, "It's not bad! It could be bad... it really depends."
"Enough with this evasiveness. Tell me what's going on." He demanded using his house prefect tone. You swallowed hard and took a deep breath."I like you."
"You... what?" He breathed, clearly taken by surprise.
"Yep. That's it." You waited, but he didn't respond. "Okay, I'll um... I'll go. I've got a test in Transfiguration to study for." You turned on your heels, wanting to leave quickly. You really couldn't take his silence anymore."Wait!" He grabbed ahold of your wrist. You looked back at him. Here it was. The rejection... or so you thought. But that certainly wasn't what happened.
"I like you, too." He said, and a large grin slowly appeared on his face.
"You... wait you like me too?"
He nodded, pulling you closer to him again to take both of your hands. "Since my first year, actually."
You looked at him, dumbfounded. "Why? I mean... not that I'm disappointed. But... You could do so much better!" You didn't want to push him away, but you were not expecting him to reciprocate your feelings. He spoke softly to you, not hesitating with an answer, "There is no one better."
"There is!"
"Then I don't want better."You stared at him, and he stared back. You shifted your gaze to your hands in his, feeling overwhelmed and so overjoyed. "Then... why didn't you really talk to me? It was like you were avoiding me, even when you had the opportunity to spend time with me and get to know me." Cedric chuckled at himself, and smiled at the ground as he let out a groan of embarrassment and regret. "Because I was nervous. I thought if we became friends, you wouldn't want to be more than just that. It's foolish, I know."
You shrugged, "I mean I was afraid you would reject me and never speak to me again and run off with Cho into the sunset so..." you trailed off. The wizard kept his eyes on you for a moment before he burst out laughing. When his laughter died down he let out a relieved sigh. "Suddenly I feel a little bit better... and Cho? Really?" You nodded, "I've seen the way she flirts with you! Like yesterday during lunch hour." You could tell when the realization hit Cedric."You mean... when you didn't want to interrupt us? Were... you jealous?"
"Tch... maybe."
Cedric shook his head and raised his brows at you, still flashing a toothy grin. "I was asking her for advice. About you." He said, poking your shoulder.
"Me?"
"Yeah, uh..." he laughed nervously again, "I was going to confess to you tonight." Your jaw dropped.
"Wow. Talk about timing."
He laughed warmly, "I know! Isn't the guy supposed to make the first move, typically?"
You grinned and shrugged playfully, "Guess I beat you to it. Better luck next time." You said. Cedric chuckled and pulled you into a warm hug, trapping you against him with deceivingly powerful arms. You'd never suspected he had a lot of strength. He usually wore sweaters and his robes. You couldn't even squirm free. Not that you wanted to. You rested your head against his chest and sighed happily.
"Will you be my girlfriend, then?" Cedric asked. You could still hear the smile in his voice.
"What do you think? Of course I will."You could hear his friends howling at the bench, cheering for him and his success.
