You sat crisscross in the Hufflepuff common room, scribbling in your diary thoughtfully. You paused briefly to take your glass of pumpkin juice and sip from it. The refreshing taste of literal fall in a cup was what made it one of your favorites. Everything was calm...
And then the boys came tumbling in after their Quidditch practice. A couple of them were shoving each other playfully while they hurried to their rooms to change out of their practice clothes. You closed your diary, eager to tell Cedric about the incident in your potions class today. Parker, a seventh year, sat down on the couch beside you. He smiled politely at you, and you nodded at him. You'd talked to him here and there, but aside from that, you didn't know him that well.
Cedric ambled into the room and shook his wet hair, sending droplets flying everywhere.
"Rough practice?" You asked.
He chuckled, "The rain just won't quit."
"Do you think it'll be gone before the game?"
He shrugged and exhaled softly, "Not sure." He pushed his wet dark locks of hair out of his face and smiled at you. "Wait here. I'm going to go change." He then pointed a finger at the boy who had taken a seat beside you, "You should change too, Parker. People won't be happy if the couch is soaked." Parker nodded, "Aye, Captain."
You watched Cedric make his way to his room, then sighed and looked forward."Are you a snitch?"
You looked beside you at Parker. "Pardon?"
The blonde gave you a charming smile, "Because you're by far the greatest catch here."
You blinked in surprise, then looked around to see if he was talking to someone in the room you hadn't noticed. This enticed a laugh from the boy beside you. You realized then that it was you he was talking to after all. You blushed a little, "Oh! That was meant for me?"
He inched closer to you, now resting a hand on the back of the couch while adjusting his position to face you. "Sorry... I've been wanting to talk to you for a while. I thought a pickup line would be the way to do it." He said to you, gazing at you with deep pools of green. You nodded, "Well it was certainly... clever."
"I've got more," he said to you as-matter-of-factly.
"Oh?" You said, feeling a bit uneasy.
"Is this the Hogwarts Express? Because it feels like you and I are headed somewhere magical," he said, giving you a wink.
You couldn't help but laugh, "Alright, that was a pretty good one." Parker grinned proudly and inched closer to you again. You scooted back a bit, glancing around nervously. He chuckled, "There's a new restaurant in Hogsmeade... I wanted to ask you if you'd like to go there with me.... maybe tonight?"
You couldn't help but smile softly, but you knew you couldn't go with him. He clearly had a thing for you, but unfortunately for him, you had your heart set on someone else.
"You're very sweet..." you told him slowly, making him grin, "but there's this guy," you looked at him carefully. Parker's face sank, and he looked down. "Oh..."
Just then, Cedric's voice could be heard from the stairwell before he approached your area. "Parker! What did I say about the couch? Go get changed," he said, clearly forcing a laugh. "Besides you could get hypothermia." Parker nodded and stood up, obeying the prefects orders. Though you felt he just really wanted to get out of the room. He left quickly, leaving you and Cedric alone. His hair was a wet tangled mess as he was drying it with a white tow, and his cheeks were still a bright pink color from the chilled air outdoors. Sweet baby Jesus this boy is hot. He was wearing a cozy-looking grey-brown sweater with navy-blue sleeves. He had dark grey sweatpants on too, with the Hufflepuff crest embroidered over the left pocket. As comfy as his clothes appeared, he seemed tense. You gave him a worried look as he ambled over to the big comfy chair adjacent from your end of the couch.
"Are you alright?" You asked him, worry dripping from your every word. He stopped drying his hair to look at you. He didn't say anything for a moment, "Of course," he told you, half-smiling. You weren't fooled. "Did something happen at practice?"
"No."
"Cedric," you challenged.
He slung the towel over his shoulder and leaned forward in the chair, resting his elbows on his knees while he gazed at you. You stared at him.
"I think you broke poor Parker's heart," he said, making you sink in your seat a bit. He continued, "So there's a guy?" You pressed your lips together and nodded, "Yes... and I didn't want to lead him on. That wouldn't be right." Cedric's eyes fell to the floor. "This guy..." he started, "what's he like?"
If you told him, he'd eventually figure out that the guy was him. You supposed that wouldn't be so bad. Maybe a few details would suffice. "He's kind, and incredibly selfless. He's really easy to talk to. He always knows how to bring a smile to my face."
You watched as Cedric's face fell, even more than Parker's had earlier. He took a moment before speaking, "He sounds like he's good for you." You nodded, worried that he'd already figured it out, and was praying he was wrong. Why else would he look so upset? You only nodded. You wanted to change the subject. Your potions could wait. You just wanted him to talk, so you could forget your worries and he could forget his.
"So... tell me about practice!"
Cedric glanced at you, a gentle smile coming to his face. He leaned back in his seat, dropping whatever was on his mind for now so he could regal you with the details of the events at practice.
