Chapter 34
The seal was taken off long time ago as Alex has told Skyler and there was no one on watch. So it was easy for us to cut straight through their yard and reach the door. We scattered and waited in shadows so that we do not draw any attention. Noah started picking on the lock. It was taking way more that he usually takes.
"Hurry up. Someone might see us," Ivy hissed from under the maple tree closest to the door. Luke and I were under the tree house and Skyler was crouching under the shed a few feet away from Noah. The dead silence between Luke and me was unsettling.
"I'm sorry," I told him because it was all I could get out of my mouth. I really was sorry.
"What for?" Luke wasn't looking at me. Rather he kept his eyes on Noah.
"For getting you arrested. I panicked," I stared at his side face.
"I'm sorry too." He turns to me, "For hiding about the blackouts. But we did what was good for you."
"I know," I looked down at my feet.
"I know you didn't blackout after I kissed you." I snapped my head towards him. He knows?
"It's open," Noah hisses before I could reply and Luke follows him.
As we enter the house, my body gave a shiver for no reason. I remembered the party. Everything that happened from entering the house replayed on my mind.
"Spread out," Noah says in a low but audible voice. We shake out glowsticks and start looking.
I take the corner room on the floor. The room didn't have much to look for. A large bed, a lamp shed, two sofas facing a small round table. I remember agent Savvaro telling us to look for hidden compartments. So I start with the bed posts. I try to knock every one of them for a hollow sound, but looks like they are all filled up. I looked under the table, inside the sofa and every inch of the walls. No sign of any hidden compartments. So I make my way out to help the others. As I get out of the room I see them already gathered up in front of the stairs.
"Found anything?" Noah asks and I shake my head. "Let's head upstairs."
I stopped before the bathroom as the image of Alex lying in the bathroom flashed in my mind. I feel a pang of sadness and then I had to remind myself that he did that to himself. My first suspicion was the size of the burn on his wrist. It was a little larger than the others. Considering there is only one brand, that was quite impossible. Unless he brands himself. If he brands himself he has to fold his wrist towards himself which will create creases on the area. Then when he stretches his hand back, the skin will smoothen and the surface area will increase creating a larger burn. My next observation was the blister on his thumb. He somehow burned it through the gloves. But the memory of Thomas Cavanaugh and his son put 2 and 2 together.
"I'll check the bathroom. You take the bathroom,' Noah put a hand on my back. It was surprising how he always knew what bothers me and what doesn't. I offered him a smile and went to the bedroom. Since the upstairs has fewer rooms and larger in size, Skyler was with me. She started rummaging through the stuffs. So I started with the walls. My eyes fell on a framed piece of paper hanging on the wall. I brought the glowstick near it and tried to read.
I was born from the fire that burned to the ground
I rose from the ashes that traced down the fire
I've been living with the water that washed away the ashes
My wound drips the blood that flows with the water
