“Flight 206 from Melbourne International to RDU, North Carolina departing in 30 minutes. Please, all passengers make their way through to gate 13.”
The loudspeaker caused several people around me to pick up their bags and rush around, trying to find their gate.
“Hey, Sis, that’s us,” Said Ivan, next to me.
I had forgotten where were actually going, seeing as I was only told this morning that the boarding school was on the other side of the freaking world.
Mum and Dad didn’t even bother coming to the airport, we had to catch a taxi. Though I preferred this, actually. I was still quite hurt from the other day and the fact that my whole life was a lie. All day yesterday was spent saying goodbyes to other family and friends, my school mates who I would more than likely never see again. If I wasn’t mingling, I was up in my room, seeking solitude from everyone.
“Oh yeah, I forgot,” I replied gloomily, and gathered my two large suitcases and carry-on bag.
We walked in silence to our gate, and sat down in the few free chairs left. Great, the flight will be packed.
Ivan read some magazine while we waited, but I just stared off into nothing, not really feeling in the mood to anything else. I could hear lots of different accents around me, mostly American, and talking about how sad or excited they were to go home. Ha, if only I were going home.
“Flight 206 passengers, please make your way to the departure gates and prepare for boarding,” The loudspeaker boomed, startling me out of my mini-trance.
Ivan stood up, with me following and moving to the bridge connecting to the plane. After finding out seats and settling down, he finally chose to talk me.
“You could have said goodbye to Mum and Dad before we left, you know.”
I snorted, it was that ludicrous. “Are you serious right now?”
“Acacia, they are just as hurt as you are from what happened,” Ivan said, glancing out the window, like he was talking about the weather, not my ruined childhood and emotions.
“You… You’re on their side with this, aren’t you?” I said accusingly. My heart dropped, how could he be on their side? My parents practically kicked me out after lying to me for almost 16 years and he supports their decision to leave home in the blink of an eye and live with a bunch of crazy people. Wait… are they even people? Uhg!
“What? No! Aca-”
I cut him off, “Ivan, no! I can’t believe you! I thought you were my brother. I thought-” I hiccupped from my raging emotions and a few tears started to build, “- you wouldn’t lie to me. Out of all the people, I trusted you the most. I-” I just fell into a crumble of tears and fast, panting breaths. It was so difficult to make him understand how I felt. Hell, it was hard for me to define it myself. I think I felt predominantly betrayed, and by family, no less.
I was rudely interrupted from my little emotional fit when an air hostess came up and bent down over me, “Excuse me, Miss, is everything alright here?”
“No,” I said
At the same time the asshole next to me said, “Yes.” The nerve.
“Sorry?” The lady looked confused, and I don’t blame her. For all she knew, this lame excuse of a brother could be harassing me. Which he was, emotionally.
“No, it is not alright,” I corrected. “I’m being sent to a boarding school and I’m not wanted.” I sounded like a whining child, but didn’t care.
“I’m sure your parents love you and it’s that last thing they want to do,” She tried to console.
“No,” I repeated for the third time. I gave her a look that said ‘go away’ and she scurried off quite fast. I felt Ivan stare at me while I put in headphones and tried to relax as the plane begun to roll up the runway.
This was going to be a long trip.
