WARNING!: TALKS ABOUT SCHOOL SHOOTING AND HAS SLIGHT VIOLENCE
It was a normal morning for Conner. He had woken up, gotten breakfast, then went on to get dressed before catching the bus for school. No one had told him that today might have been his last but when walking into the school building that was protected like a prison. It sure felt like any day could be his last if he wasn't careful. That's why when walking down the hallway to his first class of the day, Conner knows the only way to survive another day within these walls is to follow the rules carefully. Now these rules were not written or anything. They are more like unspoken rules that everyone knows.
Rule number one, always get to class on time
Rule number two, always be aware of your surroundings
and
Rule number three, if you can escape then do so
These rules make it sound like there's some type of monster lurking around in the halls. But honestly there might be, you never know. Leaving his second class Conner meets up with his best friend Micheal.
"Hey, how was first hour?" Conner asks, trying to strike up a conversation.
"Hell, Mrs.Gribbons is truly a monster!" Micheal responds with a sigh. But if only the two boys had known that the real monster was yet to come.
"Come on let's get to class." Conner changes the subject, while speeding up his pace. But that's when the first shot rings out. It was like a roar of emotion had erupted within, everyone started screaming and panicking. But Conner, he was still as a statue, he didn't know what to do. When he felt Michael tugging on his sweater trying to pull him into an abandoned hall. He still couldn't move not until another shot rang out, closer than before. This got the two boys moving. They didn't know where they were to go but they knew they had to get to safety. The shots were getting more frequent and louder as they moved along. It felt as if the monster was following them.
But at last they had found a small class room to hide in, it was in an abandoned hall towards the back of the school. But that didn't stop them from hearing the loud shots of the gun going off, nor did it stop them from crying. They don't know who's hurt if any are hurt.
"You got your phone Micheal?" Conner whispers.
"I think so, let me check." Micheal replies, taking off his back pack he starts going through his things. Only to realize that Mrs.Gribbons hadn't given him his phone back. "no, no, no, no!" he repeats in frustration.
"What?" Conner asks, confused.
"She didn't give it back!" Micheal groans. They both know now there is no way they can call for help. This is because Conner had strict parents, not allowing him to have a phone and Micheals was taken by a teacher.
"Everyone stay calm, the police are on their way, also please stay in the building you never know if more are waiting outside." Their principal's loud voice says from the speakers. This makes them feel a little better but the two boys still can't stop shaking from fear. They know at any point the shooter could bust through the thin wooden door that kept them 'safe'. And not only that they could still hear the loud bangs of the gun going off, and the cries of other students. It sounded as if they were coming from everywhere. This had the boys shaking and crying themselves. They felt so alone and so helpless.
But when they thought things couldn't get any worse the thin wooden door started to rattle and shake. Looking at each other they know what has to be done, they head to the small window in the back of the class. They know it's risky going outside but they also know staying in is just as risky. So quietly Micheal tries to open the old window. It's difficult because the window had been painted over a number of times throughout the years. But he knows it has to be done when the rattling of the door grows louder and the one on the other side starts banging on the door. He knows they are hoping it will open. But he hopes the thin layer of wood will save his life and if not his hopefully his best friend. "Come on help me!" Micheal whispers to a frozen Conner. Conner jumps out of his mind and back into reality but it was too late. The thin layer of wood broke, letting the monster in the room with the two boys. He was a tall but slender teen with shaggy red hair that covered his dark green eyes. "Jason? Jason is that you?" Conner asked with confusion written all over his face. But the red headed boy stud frozen in place holding the gun in both of his shaking hands. Micheal had finally got the window open "Come on hurry!" he whispers quietly to Conner who was yet again frozen in place. "You guys can't go out there." A broken voice came from the red head. "Why not!?" Micheal asked a little harshly only to regret it. He knows the guy is holding a gun so maybe he should choose a tone that was a little softer.
